Mystique

Mystique, usually known as Raven Darkholme, is a Marvel Comics mutant shapeshifter whose appearance and identity are deliberately unstable. She first appeared in Ms. Marvel #16, published in 1978, in a story by Chris Claremont and artist David Cockrum. Her power lets her copy another person's face, body, voice, and clothing, although early stories treated the disguise as a transformation rather than simple costume swapping. The blue-skinned, red-haired form associated with her became her recognizable default identity, yet the character's central dramatic conflict is that even her name may be an alias. In Marvel continuity, she is also the biological mother of Kurt Wagner, Nightcrawler, and her relationship with him is tied to one of the series' most consequential revelations. Mystique and the mutant precognitive Irene Adler, called Destiny, were long-term lovers and partners in crime; they raised Rogue after taking her in. Rogue later joined the X-Men, making Mystique both an enemy and an adoptive mother within the same family. Mystique founded and led the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, a group that opposed humans and repeatedly challenged the X-Men. In the original comic version of “Days of Future Past,” she attempts to assassinate Senator Robert Kelly because his anti-mutant campaign helps trigger a dystopian future. The X-Men stop her, but the event still illustrates how her political strategy differs from a straightforward superhuman attack: she uses infiltration, impersonation, and intelligence gathering. Her abilities also make her an expert infiltrator of government agencies and military organizations, though maintaining a stolen identity can require sustained concentration. In later comics, she has worked as a mercenary, spy, and occasional uneasy ally of the X-Men. She has even used her transformations to impersonate influential mutants and officials, turning public trust into a weapon. Unlike telepaths, she does not read minds, so her deceptions can be careful observation, but her extensive knowledge of the people she imitates often makes that limitation difficult to exploit. In live-action films, Rebecca Romijn played Mystique in the X-Men trilogy and Jennifer Lawrence portrayed a younger version in X-Men: First Class, X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men: Apocalypse, and Dark Phoenix.
