Vin Diesel

Vin Diesel, born Mark Sinclair on July 18, 1967, in Alameda County, California, became an actor, writer, director, and producer whose screen identity is tied to action franchises. He was raised in New York City by his mother, Delora Sherleen Vincent, an astrologer, and his stepfather, Irving H. Vincent, a theater manager and acting instructor. Diesel has said he first appeared onstage at age seven, after he and friends entered a theater intending to vandalize it and were instead offered parts in a children’s production. He later studied creative writing at Hunter College, but left before graduating to pursue filmmaking. Diesel wrote directed produced and starred in the short film Multi-Facial, released in 1995. The film draws on an auditioning actor confronting racial typecasting and was screened at Cannes. Steven Spielberg saw it and created the role of Private First Class Adrian Caparzo for Diesel in Saving Private Ryan, the 1998 World War II drama. Diesel had already made his feature directing debut with Strays, a 1997 independent film about a Manhattan bouncer and his relationships. His early acting work also included a voice performance as the title character in Brad Bird’s animated feature The Iron Giant, released in 1999. His commercial breakthrough came with 2000’s Pitch Black, in which he played the dangerous escaped convict Richard B. Riddick. Diesel returned as Riddick in The Chronicles of Riddick (2004) and Riddick (2013), and he produced the latter two films. That same year as Pitch Black, he played Xander Cage in The Fast and the Furious, opposite Paul Walker. The film began the Fast saga, with Diesel reprising Dominic Toretto in later installments including Fast & Furious, Fast Five, Furious 7, F9, and Fast X. Through his company, One Race Films, he has served as a producer on numerous franchise entries. Diesel expanded his franchise work with xXx (2002), playing government-recruited extreme-sports athlete Xander Cage, and returned in xXx: Return of Xander Cage (2017). He portrayed mobster Giacomo “Jackie” DiNorscio in Sidney Lumet’s courtroom drama Find Me Guilty (2006), a role markedly different from his action leads. In Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), he supplied the voice of Groot, repeating the part in subsequent Guardians films and Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. He also starred in the 2020 comic-book adaptation Bloodshot. His career combines self-initiated filmmaking, voice work, and long-running roles built around Riddick, Toretto, Cage, and Groot.
