Jerry Bruckheimer is an American film and television producer whose credits include *Top Gun*, *Pirates of the Caribbean* and *CSI: Crime Scene Investigation*. Born in Detroit in 1943, he studied psychology at the University of Arizona and worked in advertising before entering the film industry.
His most influential early partnership was with producer Don Simpson. Together they made *Flashdance* (1983), about a Pittsburgh steelworker pursuing a career in dance; *Beverly Hills Cop* (1984), starring Eddie Murphy as Detroit detective Axel Foley; and *Top Gun* (1986), in which Tom Cruise played naval aviator Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. The pair also produced *Days of Thunder* (1990) and *Bad Boys* (1995). Simpson died in 1996, the year their film *The Rock*, set around a hostage crisis on Alcatraz, was released.
Bruckheimer continued producing action films on a large scale. *Armageddon* (1998) sent a drilling crew into space to stop an asteroid from striking Earth. *Pearl Harbor* (2001) placed a fictional romance against the backdrop of the 1941 attack, while Ridley Scott’s *Black Hawk Down* (2001) dramatized a 1993 American military operation in Mogadishu. His credits also include *Remember the Titans* (2000), starring Denzel Washington as football coach Herman Boone during the integration of a Virginia high school.
In 2003, Bruckheimer produced *Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl*. Johnny Depp’s performance as Captain Jack Sparrow became central to a series that continued through four sequels. Bruckheimer also produced *National Treasure* (2004), in which Nicolas Cage’s Benjamin Gates searches for clues connected to the Declaration of Independence, and its 2007 sequel, *Book of Secrets*.
His television work has been similarly prominent. He served as an executive producer on *CSI: Crime Scene Investigation*, which debuted in 2000 and followed forensic investigators in Las Vegas. Its success led to spin-offs including *CSI: Miami* and *CSI: NY*. Other Bruckheimer television productions include the missing-persons drama *Without a Trace*, the unsolved-murder series *Cold Case* and the competition show *The Amazing Race*.
Decades after the original *Top Gun*, Bruckheimer produced *Top Gun: Maverick* (2022). Cruise returned as Maverick, now assigned to train a younger group of aviators for a dangerous mission. The film received an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture, bringing one of Bruckheimer’s earliest successes back into focus more than 35 years after its release.
