Christophe Beck

Christophe Beck is a Canadian film and television composer whose work ranges from the supernatural drama Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Disney’s Frozen and Marvel’s Ant-Man films. Born in Montreal, Quebec, he moved to the United States for his education, studying music at Yale University and later at the University of Southern California. His early television career became closely identified with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, where he wrote original underscore for many episodes after taking over scoring duties from the series’ first composer, Walter Murphy. Beck composed the score for “Once More, with Feeling,” Buffy’s 2001 musical episode written and directed by Joss Whedon. Rather than merely linking songs, his score helped carry the episode’s shifts between spoken scenes and musical numbers. His work on the series also included the 2003 finale “Chosen.” The Buffy scores brought him to the attention of filmmakers and helped establish a career in feature comedy and animation. He wrote the music for the 1999 comedy American Pie and returned for American Wedding (2003). His other comedy credits include Bring It On (2000), Legally Blonde (2001), The Hangover (2009), and its sequels, as well as the 2011 film The Muppets. These projects gave him repeated opportunities to shape comic timing with orchestral writing while adapting to sharply different screen styles. For Frozen (2013), Beck composed the film’s orchestral score while Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez wrote its songs. Beck’s score supports the story’s settings in Arendelle and accompanies key action and emotional sequences; it is distinct from the song soundtrack that includes “Let It Go.” He returned to that world for Frozen II (2019), again providing the score alongside songs by the Lopezes. In Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man (2015), Beck introduced a main theme built for the character played by Paul Rudd. He scored Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018) and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023), making him the composer across the trilogy. His television work also extended to Marvel Studios’ WandaVision (2021), for which he composed the series’ underscore while Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez created its original songs. The program moves through sitcom formats from different decades, and Beck’s score works alongside those changing musical languages. Across film and television, his credits show a composer who has repeatedly moved between franchise storytelling, comedy, animation, and character-driven screen music. His music often serves narrative transitions without replacing the distinctive songs or performances that define these productions.
