Witch Hat Atelier is a television anime adaptation of Kamome Shirahama’s manga series, which Kodansha has serialized in Monthly Morning Two since 2016. The show was announced in April 2022, and its official materials identify BUG FILMS as the animation studio and Ayumu Watanabe as director. Watanabe is known for directing the anime film Children of the Sea and the television series Komi Can’t Communicate. The adaptation’s released staff information also credits Kairi Unabara with character designs and Yuka Kitamura with music. Rather than treating magic as a secret talent, Witch Hat Atelier’s central premise makes it a learned craft. Its protagonist, Coco, is a girl who has long admired witches but believes that only people born with magical ability can become one. Her life changes after she encounters Qifrey, a witch who recognizes her potential. Coco discovers that spells can be made by drawing particular symbols and patterns, a revelation that is dangerous because the practice is concealed from ordinary people. Qifrey takes Coco to his atelier, where she studies alongside fellow apprentices Agott, Tetia, and Richeh. The series follows their lessons, mistakes, and encounters with the rules governing magic. A pivotal complication is that Coco’s first use of magic turns her mother to stone, giving her a personal reason to seek a remedy. The story also involves the Brimmed Caps, a group of magic users associated with forbidden spells and with magical knowledge that the witch world has banned. Shirahama’s manga has been recognized internationally: its English-language edition, published by Kodansha USA, won the 2020 Eisner Award for Best U.S. Edition of International Material—Asia. The anime draws from this established story, but its announced production is distinct from the manga’s publication. The project was first revealed with an illustration by Shirahama, and later promotional videos introduced the animated versions of Coco and Qifrey. The television adaptation has been promoted as a 2025 broadcast project; this is an announced release target, not evidence that every territory receives it simultaneously. Official announcements have emphasized the staff lineup and visual translation of Shirahama’s detailed ink work. At the narrative level, the show centers on the consequences of drawing magic incorrectly as much as on its classroom setting. Coco’s accidental transformation of her mother makes the rules around spellcraft immediate, while Qifrey’s atelier gives the apprentices a place to practice under supervision.
