One Piece is a Japanese television anime based on Eiichiro Oda’s manga of the same name. Produced by Toei Animation, it premiered on Fuji TV on October 20, 1999, and follows Monkey D. Luffy, a boy whose body becomes rubbery after he eats a Devil Fruit. Luffy sets out from East Blue to become the Pirate King by finding the legendary treasure known as the One Piece, left by the late pirate Gol D. Roger. His straw hat, originally given to him by the pirate Shanks, becomes the emblem of his crew.

Across its long-running story, Luffy recruits swordsman Roronoa Zoro, navigator Nami, sniper Usopp, cook Sanji, doctor Tony Tony Chopper, archaeologist Nico Robin, shipwright Franky, musician Brook, and helmsman Jinbe. The group is called the Straw Hat Pirates. Their first ship, the Going Merry, is eventually replaced by the Thousand Sunny, designed by Franky. The series divides the world into seas and the dangerous Grand Line, later entering the New World after the two-year time skip. Major locations include Alabasta, Skypiea, Water Seven, Enies Lobby, Thriller Bark, Sabaody Archipelago, Marineford, Fish-Man Island, Dressrosa, Whole Cake Island, Wano Country, and Egghead.

Rather than presenting piracy as a simple adventure, One Piece repeatedly pits the crew against the World Government, the Marines, and powerful pirate crews. Robin’s past reveals the government’s destruction of Ohara and its ban on researching the Poneglyphs, ancient stone inscriptions connected to the Void Century. At Enies Lobby, Luffy declares war on the World Government to rescue Robin from CP9. At Marineford, he witnesses the execution of his brother Portgas D. Ace, a turning point that leads to his training with Silvers Rayleigh.

The anime has been broadcast continuously for more than two decades, though its episode count and scheduling have changed over time. It has also generated theatrical films, television specials, video games, and merchandise. Several films involved Oda closely in their production, including One Piece Film: Strong World, One Piece Film: Z, One Piece Film: Gold, One Piece: Stampede, One Piece Film: Red. Film Red, released in Japan in 2022, centers on Uta, a singer with a connection to Shanks. The television adaptation is known for using opening themes, recurring eyecatches, and a large Japanese voice cast led by Mayumi Tanaka as Luffy. Its continuing narrative has adapted major manga arcs while expanding scenes for weekly television, making pacing a frequent subject of audience discussion.
