Taffarel

Cláudio André Mergen Taffarel, usually known simply as Taffarel, was born on 8 May 1966 in Santa Rosa, Rio Grande do Sul. He became one of Brazil’s defining goalkeepers during an international career that stretched from the mid-1980s into the 2000s. His senior club breakthrough came with Internacional of Porto Alegre, where he played from 1985 to 1990 and won the Campeonato Gaúcho in 1987 and 1988. He was already Brazil’s goalkeeper at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, helping the team reach the final; Brazil took silver after losing to the Soviet Union.

Taffarel’s reputation was built especially with the national side. He was first-choice goalkeeper when Brazil won the 1989 Copa América, the country’s first title in that tournament since 1949. At the 1990 World Cup in Italy, Brazil were eliminated by Argentina in the round of 16, but Taffarel remained central to the team’s next cycle under Carlos Alberto Parreira. In the 1994 World Cup final against Italy at the Rose Bowl, he kept a clean sheet through 120 minutes. Brazil won its fourth World Cup after the shoot-out ended 3–2, with Roberto Baggio famously sending Italy’s final kick over the bar.

Four years later, Taffarel again reached the World Cup final. In France 1998, his decisive moment came in the semi-final against the Netherlands: he saved penalties from Phillip Cocu and Ronald de Boer in the shoot-out, sending Brazil to the final. Brazil then lost 3–0 to hosts France. Taffarel also won the Copa América in 1997 and was part of Brazil’s victorious 1997 FIFA Confederations Cup squad. He finished with 101 appearances for Brazil, a total that placed him among the country’s most-capped players.

His European club career began at Parma in 1990. He won the Coppa Italia in 1991–92, the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in 1992–93, and the UEFA Super Cup in 1993 with the Italian club. After spells at Reggiana and Atlético Mineiro, he joined Galatasaray in 1998. There he won the Süper Lig in 1998–99 and 1999–2000, as well as the UEFA Cup in 1999–2000. In the UEFA Cup final against Arsenal, he saved Patrick Vieira’s penalty in the shoot-out as Galatasaray won 4–1 after a goalless match.

After retiring, Taffarel became a goalkeeping coach, working with Galatasaray before joining Liverpool’s staff in 2021. He also coached Brazil’s national-team goalkeepers, extending his connection with the side he had represented at major tournaments.
