Robert Pattinson

Robert Pattinson was born in London on May 13, 1986. He attended The Harrodian School and began acting through the Barnes Theatre Company, where he appeared in productions including Our Town. His first screen role was Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, released in 2005. The part introduced him to a large international audience.

Pattinson’s breakthrough came with Twilight, the 2008 film adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s novel. As Edward Cullen, a 104-year-old vampire appearing as a teenager, he starred opposite Kristen Stewart’s Bella Swan. The film’s commercial success produced four sequels: New Moon (2009), Eclipse (2010), Breaking Dawn—Part 1 (2011), and Breaking Dawn—Part 2 (2012). Pattinson returned for every installment, making Edward the role most closely associated with his early career. The franchise made him globally recognizable, but he subsequently pursued smaller, director-led projects that challenged the romantic image established by Twilight. In Water for Elephants (2011), he played a veterinary student opposite Reese Witherspoon and Christoph Waltz. In Cosmopolis (2012), directed by David Cronenberg, he portrayed billionaire Eric Packer during a single day of financial and personal disintegration.

His independent work became prominent in Good Time (2017), directed by Josh and Benny Safdie. Pattinson played Connie Nikas, a reckless New York criminal trying to free his brother after a botched bank robbery. The role demonstrated his willingness to work without conventional leading-man polish. He followed it with High Life (2018), Claire Denis’s science-fiction film, playing a prisoner sent toward a black hole aboard a spacecraft. In The Lighthouse (2019), Robert Eggers’s stark black-and-white psychological drama, he shared the screen with Willem Dafoe as a nineteenth-century lighthouse keeper whose isolation turns increasingly hallucinatory.

Pattinson then appeared in Christopher Nolan’s Tenet (2020) as an unnamed operative known only as the Protagonist. The espionage film uses “inversion,” a process that reverses an object’s entropy, and cast him opposite John David Washington. In 2022, Pattinson played Bruce Wayne and Batman in Matt Reeves’s The Batman. Set during the character’s second year as a vigilante, the film follows his investigation of murders committed by the Riddler, played by Paul Dano. Pattinson’s version emphasizes Batman’s detective work and a damaged young man’s gradual recognition that symbols can inspire hope as well as fear. Beyond acting, he has contributed music to films: he performed songs for Twilight, including “Never Think” and “Let Me Sign.”
