Michael Bay is an American film director and producer known for action films built around rapid editing, large-scale stunts, and elaborate visual effects. Born in Los Angeles on February 17, 1965, he studied film at Wesleyan University and later attended the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Before directing feature films, Bay made commercials and music videos; his commercial work included the “Got Milk?” advertisement featuring a history expert whose mouth is full of peanut butter.

Bay’s first feature was *Bad Boys* (1995), a police action comedy starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. The film’s success helped establish both actors as major screen stars and launched Bay’s feature-directing career. He followed it with *The Rock* (1996), starring Sean Connery, Nicolas Cage, and Ed Harris. Its story centers on a rogue general who takes control of Alcatraz Island and threatens San Francisco with chemical weapons. Bay’s next film, *Armageddon* (1998), follows a team of oil drillers sent to destroy an asteroid on course to hit Earth. It became one of the highest-grossing releases of that year.

In 2001 Bay directed *Pearl Harbor*, a wartime drama depicting the 1941 Japanese attack and the subsequent Doolittle Raid. He returned to contemporary action with *Bad Boys II* (2003), again pairing Smith and Lawrence. In 2005 he directed *The Island*, a science-fiction thriller about human clones being raised as organ donors. These films share an interest in machinery, explosions, and physical spectacle, but their plots range from police investigations to military history and speculative fiction.

Bay’s most commercially prominent franchise work began with *Transformers* (2007), adapted from Hasbro’s toy line and animated series. Shia LaBeouf plays teenager Sam Witwicky, who becomes involved in a conflict between the Autobots and Decepticons. Bay directed four sequels: *Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen* (2009), *Dark of the Moon* (2011), *Age of Extinction* (2014), and *The Last Knight* (2017). The films helped make the franchise a global box-office property, while their extensive computer-generated robot battles became a defining feature of the series.

Bay also directed *Pain & Gain* (2013), a crime comedy based on a 1990s kidnapping and extortion case in Florida, and *13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi* (2016), dramatizing the 2012 attack on a U.S. diplomatic compound. His later films include the Netflix action thriller *6 Underground* (2019) and *Ambulance* (2022), a Los Angeles-set heist film starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. His career has been commercially influential, particularly through *Transformers*, and his forceful visual style has remained recognizable across stories drawn from very different subjects.
