Hulk (footballer)

Hulk, born Givanildo Vieira de Sousa on 25 July 1986 in Campina Grande, Paraíba, is a Brazilian footballer whose combination of strength, acceleration and a formidable left foot made him one of his generation’s most recognizable forwards. His father gave him the nickname “Hulk” because he thought the boy’s physique resembled the comic-book character. He developed in Brazil before moving to Japan as a teenager, joining Kawasaki Frontale in 2005. Kawasaki loaned him to Consadole Sapporo, where he scored 25 league goals during the 2007 J2 League season and helped secure promotion as champions. A 2008 loan at Tokyo Verdy produced seven goals in 13 J1 League appearances. In July 2008, Porto signed him. There he became a leading attacking figure under Jesualdo Ferreira, winning the Primeira Liga in 2008–09, 2009–10 and 2010–11. Porto enjoyed an exceptional 2010–11 campaign under André Villas-Boas, taking the league, Portuguese Cup, Portuguese Super Cup and UEFA Europa League. Hulk played in the Europa League final against Braga, won 1–0 through Radamel Falcao’s goal. He also won another Portuguese league title in 2011–12, and was named Primeira Liga Player of the Year for that season. In September 2012, Hulk moved to Zenit Saint Petersburg for a fee reported at about €40 million, a Russian transfer record at the time. His Zenit spell brought the 2014–15 Russian Premier League title and the 2015–16 Russian Cup. In June 2016, he joined Shanghai SIPG in China. With the club, later renamed Shanghai Port, he won the 2018 Chinese Super League championship. Hulk returned to Brazil in February 2021, signing for Atlético Mineiro. He immediately became pivotal as Atlético won the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A and Copa do Brasil in 2021, completing a domestic double. He finished that league season as its leading scorer with 19 goals, and received the Bola de Ouro award as Brazil’s leading player. Atlético also won consecutive Campeonato Mineiro titles from 2021 through 2024. For Brazil, Hulk made his senior debut in 2009 and represented the national team at the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the 2014 World Cup. He was part of Brazil’s victorious 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup squad and won an Olympic silver medal at London 2012. In the 2014 tournament, Brazil reached the semifinals before losing 7–1 to Germany. Across his 48 caps, he scored 11 goals for Brazil. His impact remains substantial today in club football, notably with Atlético Mineiro.
