Danrlei

Danrlei de Deus Hinterholz, known in football as Danrlei, was born on 18 April 1973 in Crissiumal, Rio Grande do Sul. The Brazilian goalkeeper is identified above all with Grêmio, the Porto Alegre club for which he became a major figure during the 1990s and early 2000s. He joined Grêmio’s senior side in 1993 and remained there until 2003, a decade that coincided with one of the most decorated stretches in the club’s modern history. His long spell made him much more than a short-term title winner: he was the goalkeeper associated with Grêmio’s return to national and continental prominence.

His defining achievement came in the 1995 Copa Libertadores. Grêmio eliminated Palmeiras in the quarter-finals and Emelec in the semi-finals before meeting Colombia’s Atlético Nacional in the final. After a 3–1 first-leg victory in Porto Alegre and a 1–1 draw in Medellín, Grêmio won the tie 4–2 on aggregate. Danrlei was the team’s goalkeeper throughout that victorious campaign, which delivered Grêmio its second Libertadores crown, following the club’s 1983 triumph. The result also sent Grêmio to the 1995 Intercontinental Cup in Tokyo, where the Brazilian champions drew 0–0 with Ajax but lost the subsequent penalty shoot-out to Ajax’s Dutch side.

Danrlei also guarded Grêmio’s goal in the club’s 1996 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A title run. That championship was secured after a final against Portuguesa and remains a central trophy from his time at the club. His Grêmio honours include Copa do Brasil wins in 1994, 1997 and 2001, plus Campeonato Gaúcho titles. These were not ceremonial connections: he was a regular goalkeeper in an era that placed Grêmio in decisive matches. In 2001, the Copa do Brasil victory over Corinthians gave him another national cup, confirming his association with a team that won knockout competitions in different Brazilian football seasons.

After his Grêmio period, Danrlei continued his playing career with Fluminense and Atlético Mineiro in Brazil and with Beitar Jerusalem in Israel. Those moves did not displace his Grêmio identity, the enduring reference point of his public profile. He later entered politics. Running for PSD, he was elected a federal deputy for Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil’s 2014 election. His transition from a goalkeeper known for Libertadores, Brazilian league and Copa do Brasil successes to a member of the Chamber of Deputies is a documented second chapter of his career.
