Dan Watters is a British comics writer whose work often combines horror, fantasy, and noir with sharply defined mythologies and morally complicated protagonists. He first drew significant attention with Limbo, a 2016–2017 series published by BOOM! Studios and illustrated by Caspar Wijngaard. The story follows occult detective Will Cobb and his search for the missing memory of New Orleans, blending supernatural investigation with the city’s distinctive music and visual culture.
Watters later became associated with Vertigo and Lucifer. In his 2018 Lucifer series, illustrated primarily by Max Fiumara, Lucifer Morningstar leaves Heaven and attempts to establish a new creation outside God’s design. The book treats its theological premise as both cosmic adventure and character drama, while bringing Mazikeen and other familiar figures into a story about freedom, responsibility, and authorship. Watters and Fiumara’s work was collected as Lucifer: The Infernal Comedy.
His creator-owned series Coffin Bound, published by Image Comics in 2019, was drawn by Dani. It centers on Taqa, a young woman fleeing across a dying desert world while carrying a coffin containing the body of her dead lover. The series builds its world from grotesque folklore, desert imagery, and a recurring tension between escape and obligation. Rather than presenting a conventional quest, it uses fragmented narration and striking character designs to make Taqa’s emotional burden inseparable from the physical coffin.
Watters reunited with Wijngaard for Home Sick Pilots, an Image Comics horror series launched in 2020. Its central setting is an abandoned haunted house, and its plot follows three teenagers whose lives become entangled with the house’s violent history and a punk band’s music. The story shifts between different periods and viewpoints, using the building almost as a character rather than merely as scenery. Wijngaard’s art gives the series saturated colors and deliberately unsettling transformations, while Watters connects its supernatural threat to grief, trauma, and adolescent isolation.
He also wrote Arkham City: The Order of the World, a 2021 DC Black Label miniseries illustrated by Dani. The book follows Dr. Joy as she investigates a string of murders in Gotham connected to Arkham Asylum, whose inmates and institutional history provide the story’s central horror. Watters has additionally written for established characters including Batman, Wonder Woman, and the Sandman Universe, but his creator-owned projects consistently show his interest in building worlds where supernatural rules expose psychological and political pressures. His work makes visual atmosphere central to storytelling itself.
