Antonio Banderas was born José Antonio Domínguez Bandera on 10 August 1960 in Málaga, Spain. He initially trained at Málaga’s School of Dramatic Art and later joined Madrid’s National Theatre, where director Pedro Almodóvar noticed him. Banderas made his film debut in Labyrinth of Passion (1982), Almodóvar’s exuberant comedy, beginning a collaboration that also included Matador (1986), Law of Desire (1987), Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1988), and Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! (1989). These early Spanish films established him as an actor capable of combining theatrical intensity, erotic provocation, and comic timing.
In 1992, Banderas moved into American cinema with The Mambo Kings, playing musician Nestor Castillo. He then appeared in Philadelphia (1993) as Miguel Álvarez, the partner of Tom Hanks’s character, and in Interview with the Vampire (1994) as Armand. His action-star profile expanded through Robert Rodriguez’s Desperado (1995), where he played mariachi-turned-gunslinger El Mariachi, and The Mask of Zorro (1998), in which he portrayed Alejandro Murrieta opposite Catherine Zeta-Jones. He reprised Zorro in The Legend of Zorro (2005).
Banderas has repeatedly worked across genres and languages. He voiced the swashbuckling cat Puss in Shrek 2 (2004), Shrek the Third (2007), Shrek Forever After (2010), and the spin-off Puss in Boots (2011), later returning for Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022). He directed Crazy in Alabama (1999), starring Melanie Griffith, and acted in films including Once Upon a Time in Mexico (2003), Pain and Glory (2019), and The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard (2021). His performance as Salvador Mallo, a filmmaker confronting memory, addiction, and grief in Pain and Glory, earned him the 2019 Cannes Film Festival Best Actor award and an Academy Award nomination.
Beyond film, Banderas has maintained a major stage and musical presence. On Broadway, he starred as Guido Contini in the 2003 revival of Nine, winning the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical. He had earlier played Che in the 1996 film version of Evita, sharing the screen with Madonna. Banderas also became a producer and entrepreneur, developing fragrances and fashion ventures under his name. In 2010, he received Spain’s Gold Medal of the Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences. After suffering a heart attack in 2017, he returned to demanding work and continued acting internationally. His career remains closely associated with Spanish cinema, Hollywood genre films, animated characters, and Almodóvar’s distinctive body of work over several decades.
