Alejandro González Iñárritu is a Mexican filmmaker whose work often links separate lives through moral consequence, grief, and chance. Born in Mexico City on August 15, 1963, he began professionally as a radio host and music producer before directing commercials and composing for Mexican radio. His first feature, Amores perros (2000), written by Guillermo Arriaga, follows three stories connected by a car crash in Mexico City. The film won the Critics’ Week Grand Prize at Cannes and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film, establishing Iñárritu internationally through its violent, fragmented portrait of urban inequality and poverty.

His second feature, 21 Grams (2003), shifted to an setting and used a nonlinear structure to examine the aftermath of a fatal collision. Babel (2006) expanded that strategy across Morocco, Japan, Mexico, and the United States, where narratives converge around a rifle. It earned Iñárritu the Best Director award at Cannes, while the film received seven Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. After ending his writing partnership with Arriaga, he made Biutiful (2010), a Spanish-language Barcelona drama starring Javier Bardem as Uxbal, a dying father whose work and responsibilities collide. Bardem received an Oscar nomination for the role.

Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014) starred Michael Keaton as Riggan Thomson, a former superhero-film star attempting to mount a Raymond Carver play on Broadway. Iñárritu presented the drama as if it were one continuous camera movement, combining elaborate choreography with practical effects and dark comedy. The film won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay. In The Revenant (2015), he followed frontiersman Hugh Glass, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, after a bear attack and abandonment by his expedition. The production became known for difficult wilderness conditions; Iñárritu won his second consecutive directing Oscar.

In 2017, he created Carne y Arena, an immersive virtual-reality installation based on interviews with Central American migrants and their perilous journeys across the United States-Mexico border. The Academy awarded Iñárritu a special achievement Oscar for the project. His feature, Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths (2022), follows a Mexican journalist and documentary filmmaker returning to Mexico City amid memories, family tensions, and surreal distortions. Although his filmography is small, it has moved between languages, countries, genres, and scales while retaining concerns with responsibility and human connection. His awards and methods reflect an engagement with cinematic form.
