Togepi is a Pokémon introduced in the 1999 Japanese releases Pokémon Gold and Silver for Game Boy Color. It occupies National Pokédex number 175 and is classified as the Spike Ball Pokémon. In its original games, Togepi was a pure Normal-type baby Pokémon; later, Pokémon X and Y changed it to the Fairy type when that type was introduced. Its Pokédex descriptions say that happiness stored inside its shell produces a mysterious energy, and its shell is decorated with red and blue patterns. Togepi is only about one foot tall and weighs 35.3 pounds, according to its standard Pokédex data.
Togepi's most recognizable story begins with an egg in the Pokémon animated series. In the episode “The Egg-S-Cellent Adventure,” Ash receives an unusual egg and carries it while traveling. It hatches as Togepi in “Who Gets to Keep Togepi?” Misty wins the argument over who should raise it, and Togepi thereafter treats her as its primary caretaker. This relationship becomes a recurring feature: Togepi often rides in Misty's arms, uses Metronome unpredictably, and reacts to danger by triggering comic but sometimes effective attacks. The anime gives Togepi a distinctly childlike role, rather than presenting it as a conventional battler.
In the games, Togepi is obtained from an Egg given by an aide of Professor Elm in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal. Because it is received as an Egg, its individual traits and nature are determined when it is generated. It evolves into Togetic when it levels up with high friendship, making friendship central to its progression. In later games, the Shiny Charm and breeding systems make Togepi's Egg status especially relevant to collectors. Its ability is Hustle, which raises physical attack power while lowering move accuracy; Serene Grace is an alternative ability that doubles the chance of move effects.
Togepi's usefulness is limited by its low offensive stats, but Metronome can produce results because it selects a move at random. Its Fairy typing gives it resistance to Bug, Dark, and Fighting attacks, while leaving it vulnerable to Poison and Steel. Togepi appears in spin-off works including Pokémon Mystery Dungeon and Pokémon GO, where players encounter it through Eggs, events, or limited research. Its popularity made it a merchandise mascot alongside Pikachu. Despite its comic behavior, Togepi remains important for connecting Johto to the anime's cast and showing that care and friendship can define a Pokémon's development as battles.
