Spider-Man is the superhero identity of Peter Parker, a Queens teenager created by writer Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko for Marvel Comics. He first appeared in Amazing Fantasy #15, published in August 1962, where a radioactive spider bite gives him strength, agility, wall-crawling ability, and a precognitive “spider-sense.” After allowing a fleeing burglar to escape, Peter discovers that the same criminal has killed his Uncle Ben. Ben’s lesson, “With great power there must also come great responsibility,” becomes the moral foundation of Spider-Man’s career. Unlike established heroes, Peter begins as an anxious, broke student managing school, work, grief, and crime-fighting.

The character’s early comic history centers on consequences rather than effortless triumph. In The Amazing Spider-Man, launched in 1963, Peter faces enemies including the Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Vulture, Sandman, and Kraven the Hunter. He photographs himself for the Daily Bugle, selling images to editor J. Jonah Jameson, who brands him a menace. Peter’s relationships are consequential: he dates Gwen Stacy and later marries Mary Jane Watson in continuity. The 1973 story “The Night Gwen Stacy Died” is a turning point, depicting Gwen’s death during a confrontation involving the Green Goblin. Spider-Man’s supporting cast makes his life continuous and personal.

Across later stories, Peter’s powers and identity change without erasing the original premise. He temporarily loses his abilities in “Spider-Man No More!” and later confronts the alien symbiote that becomes Venom. The 1984 Secret Wars event introduces the black costume, while its dangerous bond with Peter leads to Eddie Brock’s transformation into Venom. In 2000, Marvel launched Ultimate Spider-Man, a separate continuity that modernized Peter’s origin for a new audience. Spider-Man also joins the Avengers, works beside heroes such as Daredevil, and briefly becomes Doctor Octopus’s host in the Superior Spider-Man storyline, after Otto Octavius swaps minds directly with him.

On screen, Tobey Maguire played Peter Parker in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man (2002), Spider-Man 2 (2004), and Spider-Man 3 (2007). Andrew Garfield portrayed him in The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014). Tom Holland’s version first appears in Captain America: Civil War (2016), then headlines Spider-Man: Homecoming, Far From Home, and No Way Home. The animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) centers on Miles Morales, while presenting multiple Spider-people across dimensions. These adaptations preserve the character’s defining tension: spectacular abilities never remove Peter’s obligations to family, community, accountability, or the consequences of his choices in the modern world.
