True Detective

True Detective is an American anthology crime drama created by Nic Pizzolatto. Its first season, released by HBO in January 2014, follows Louisiana State Police detectives Rust Cohle and Marty Hart as they investigate the 1995 murder of Dora Lange. Matthew McConaughey plays Cohle, a relentlessly skeptical former undercover officer, and Woody Harrelson plays Hart, his married partner. The eight-episode season moves between the original case and later interviews conducted in 2012, gradually showing why the two men stopped working together. Cary Joji Fukunaga directed every episode of that season; Pizzolatto wrote them. Its title and opening credits use a double-exposure design, and its theme song is “Far from Any Road” by The Handsome Family. The investigation leads Cohle and Hart toward yellow King imagery, the isolated community of Erath, and the Tuttle family's religious and political influence. Their pursuit identifies Errol Childress as Dora's killer, while exposing a network of abuse linked to men in Louisiana. The finale, “After You've Gone,” takes place at Carcosa, Childress's maze-like property, where Cohle and Hart confront him and survive the attack. Cohle's near-death experience shifts his bleak outlook; he tells Hart that although darkness once seemed to be winning, the light is now winning. Season one’s success led HBO to continue the series with characters and settings. The second season premiered in 2015 and centers on a California city called Vinci. Colin Farrell plays detective Ray Velcoro, Vince Vaughn plays businessman Frank Semyon, Rachel McAdams plays detective Ani Bezzerides, and Taylor Kitsch plays highway patrol officer Paul Woodrugh. The four converge after city manager Ben Caspere is found dead. Justin Lin directed two episodes, and the season investigates land deals, police corruption, and the consequences of Semyon’s attempt to go legitimate. It ends with Bezzerides and Velcoro’s son leaving California after Velcoro is killed. After a break, True Detective returned in 2019 with its third season, set three periods in Arkansas Ozarks. Mahershala Ali portrays Wayne Hays, a detective revisiting the 1980 disappearance of Will and Julie Purcell; Stephen Dorff plays his partner Roland West. Carmen Ejogo, Ray Fisher, and Scoot McNairy co-star. The season was written by Pizzolatto, who shared directing duties with Jeremy Saulnier and Daniel Sackheim. True Detective: Night Country premiered on HBO in January 2024. Created, written, and directed by Issa López, it stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as Alaska investigators examining the disappearance of researchers from Tsalal Arctic Research Station.
