Slow Horses

Slow Horses is a British espionage drama made for Apple TV+. It adapts Mick Herron’s Slough House novels, beginning with the 2010 book Slow Horses. The series follows personnel assigned to Slough House, an MI5 administrative backwater for agents whose errors or troublesome conduct have derailed their careers. They are called “slow horses,” in contrast to the service’s elite operatives. The opening season began with a two-episode premiere on April 1, 2022, and Apple released its remaining four episodes weekly. Its deliberately shabby office and damaged staff give the show a notably different setting from polished screen spy fantasies elsewhere.

Gary Oldman plays Jackson Lamb, Slough House’s manager and a former top operative. Lamb is foul-mouthed, slovenly, and relentlessly insulting, but his apparent indifference conceals sharp professional instincts and loyalty to his people. Jack Lowden plays River Cartwright, the young agent whose botched airport training operation sends him to Slough House. Kristin Scott Thomas portrays Diana Taverner, MI5’s ambitious deputy director-general, while Saskia Reeves plays Catherine Standish, Lamb’s highly capable assistant and a recovering alcoholic. The ensemble also includes Rosalind Eleazar as Louisa Guy, Christopher Chung as Roddy Ho, Kadiff Kirwan as Marcus Longridge, and Jonathan Pryce as River’s grandfather.

In season one, River and his colleagues investigate the abduction of Hassan Ahmed, a British university student whose captors threaten to behead him online. The case exposes competing agendas inside MI5, especially Taverner’s willingness to use Slough House as cover. James Hawes directed all six episodes of that first season. Season two adapts Herron’s Dead Lions and brings retired agent Dickie Bow’s death and Russian sleeper agents into the story. Season three, based on Real Tigers, turns on Catherine’s kidnapping and a security crisis involving MI5. The show retains Herron’s world of rivalry, compromised loyalties, and consequences for past actions.

Season four adapts Spook Street and began streaming on September 4, 2024. Its plot links a London bombing with the history of David Cartwright, a former senior intelligence figure whose failing memory worries his family. Hugo Weaving joined the cast as Frank Harkness, a dangerous figure tied to that past. Apple announced a fifth season in January 2024, before the fourth season arrived; it adapts London Rules, Herron’s fifth Slough House novel. Oldman received Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his performance as Lamb at the 75th and 76th ceremonies. The series remains ongoing.
