Yoo In-shik

Yoo In-shik is a South Korean television director whose credits include Dr. Romantic, Vagabond, and Extraordinary Attorney Woo. His dramas are distinct not because they simply fit broad genres, but because each is tied to a specific world: the provincial Doldam Hospital of Dr. Romantic, an aviation-disaster conspiracy in Vagabond, and a Seoul law firm in Extraordinary Attorney Woo. He has worked on major SBS productions and directed Extraordinary Attorney Woo for ENA, the channel whose 2022 broadcast of the series became an exceptional ratings success. In Dr. Romantic, Yoo directed the first season, written by Kang Eun-kyung and broadcast by SBS from November 2016 to January 2017. Han Suk-kyu plays the elusive surgeon Kim Sabu, also called Teacher Kim, who works at Doldam Hospital after leaving the center of Seoul medicine. The story brings younger doctors Kang Dong-joo, played by Yoo Yeon-seok, and Yoon Seo-jung, played by Seo Hyun-jin, into his orbit. The series combined hospital emergencies with Kim's conflict against powerful figures at the larger Geodae Hospital. Its success led to later seasons, returning to Doldam and Han's character. Yoo also directed Vagabond, SBS's 2019 action thriller, written by Jang Young-chul and Jung Kyung-soon. Lee Seung-gi plays Cha Dal-geon, a stuntman whose nephew dies when a civilian airliner crashes in Morocco. Refusing to accept the official explanation, Dal-geon discovers evidence pointing toward sabotage and becomes entangled in a struggle involving government agencies, arms contracts, and political power. Bae Suzy plays Go Hae-ri, an agent of the National Intelligence Service, and Shin Sung-rok plays NIS team leader Gi Tae-ung. The series was released internationally through Netflix, extending its audience beyond its Korean SBS run. Extraordinary Attorney Woo brought Yoo especially broad attention in 2022. Written by Moon Ji-won, its sixteen episodes aired on ENA from June 29 to August 18. Park Eun-bin stars as Woo Young-woo, a new attorney with autism spectrum disorder and an extraordinary memory for legal material. At the Hanbada law firm, Woo handles cases ranging from a murder trial to disputes involving businesses, while learning workplace customs and building relationships with colleagues. Kang Tae-oh plays Lee Jun-ho, a litigation-team employee who becomes close to her. The drama's title character identifies herself by reciting palindromic words, including “kayak,” “deed,” and her own name. Yoo's direction helped shape a series that paired individual cases with Woo's evolving place inside Hanbada and the social world beyond its offices.
