Ume Aoki

Ume Aoki is a Japanese manga artist, best known for creating Hidamari Sketch and designing Puella Magi Madoka Magica characters. Hidamari Sketch began serialization in Houbunsha's Manga Time Kirara Carat during 2004, establishing the work that would define her career. It follows Yuno, an aspiring artist attending Yamabuki Art High School, after she moves into Hidamari Apartments beside the school. The initial neighbors are Miyako, Sae, and Hiro, while subsequent stories add residents Nazuna and Nori to the apartment ensemble. Rather than using an plot, Aoki builds chapters around art assignments, meals, school events, friendships, and the residents' ordinary routines. Shaft adapted Hidamari Sketch, beginning with a 2007 television series and continuing through x365, Hoshimittsu, x Honeycomb, and graduation specials. Aoki's involvement with Madoka Magica put her designs before a far wider audience than the readership of her slice-of-life manga. She received credit as the original character designer on the 2011 anime, produced by Shaft and directed by Akiyuki Shinbo. Gen Urobuchi wrote that series, whose narrative overturns expectations established by its initially cute, magical-girl visual presentation and promotional material. Aoki created Madoka Kaname, Homura Akemi, Sayaka Miki, Mami Tomoe, and Kyoko Sakura as the schoolgirl designs for the project. The anime was followed by compilation films in 2012 and the later film Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Movie Rebellion. Her drawings combine rounded faces, compact bodies, pastel-like color choices, and decorative details, qualities that strongly shaped Madoka Magica's image. The contrast between those designs and Madoka Magica's violent revelations became central to discussion of the anime when it was broadcast. Her Madoka designs also supplied the basis for numerous franchise manga, games, films, merchandising, and licensed spin-off projects produced later. Aoki's two best-known properties therefore display different uses of her visual language: domestic comedy in one, fantasy tragedy in another. In Hidamari Sketch, Yuno's drawing ambitions give Aoki opportunities to incorporate sketchbooks, galleries, teachers, and artistic self-doubt into recurring comedy. The title's Japanese word hidamari means sunny place, a name for the apartment house that anchors the manga and adaptations. Although Madoka Magica is often discussed as a genre-defying production, Aoki's credit was for original character design, not series writing. This distinction matters because Urobuchi supplied the screenplay, while Shinbo directed the television version that made the designs internationally familiar. Aoki's name consequently remains inseparable from Yuno's apartment comedy and from the character silhouettes that introduced Madoka Magica's tragic world.
