Keiichiro Saito

Keiichiro Saito is a Japanese anime director and animator whose television work includes the series Bocchi the Rock! and Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End. His profile rose sharply with Bocchi the Rock!, CloverWorks’ 2022 adaptation of Aki Hamaji’s four-panel manga. The twelve-episode television series follows Hitori “Bocchi” Gotō, a severely shy guitarist who joins Nijika Ijichi, Ryō Yamada, and Ikuyo Kita in Kessoku Band. Saito directed the show, which aired from October through December 2022. Its visual storytelling repeatedly externalizes Bocchi’s anxiety through abrupt shifts of medium and style, including stop-motion-like passages, live-action imagery, and deliberately crude comic transformations; those choices are tied to scenes in this adaptation, rather than a general label for his work. In 2023, Saito directed Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End for Madhouse. It adapts the manga written by Kanehito Yamada and illustrated by Tsukasa Abe. The story begins after the hero party has already defeated the Demon King: Frieren, an elf mage, confronts the long-term consequences of her lifespan as former companions Himmel, Heiter, and Eisen grow old. She later travels with Fern and Stark, revisiting places linked to the earlier adventure while pursuing magic and memories. The anime’s initial run comprised 28 episodes and broadcast from September 2023 through March 2024; its premiere was a four-episode special. At the 2025 Crunchyroll Anime Awards, Saito received the Best Director award for Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End. The series also won Anime of the Year at that ceremony, linking his directing credit to a documented international award result. This recognition followed Bocchi the Rock!’s strong reception among television anime audiences, but the two productions are distinct in source material, studio, and narrative scale: Bocchi centers on school band activity and performance anxiety, whereas Frieren uses a post-adventure fantasy journey to examine time, bereavement, and memory. Saito’s credited role on both series is director, not creator of their underlying manga. Hamaji created Bocchi the Rock!, while Yamada and Abe created Frieren. That distinction matters because the anime versions carry Saito’s responsibility for screen direction and adaptation presentation, while their characters and original serialized stories originated in print. His work on these two high-profile series has therefore been defined by concrete adaptations rather than an original television property bearing his name. At the awards ceremony, Frieren’s win came after its first season had completed, not during its original broadcast. Both series remain identifiable by their Japanese television anime credits and source manga.
