Eiichiro Oda

Eiichiro Oda was born on January 1, 1975, in Kumamoto City, Japan. He has said that, at four, watching the animated Vicky the Viking persuaded him to pursue manga, because he believed it looked more enjoyable than a conventional job. In 1992, while still a high-school student, Oda used the name Tsuki Himizu for Wanted!, a western-influenced one-shot that earned him recognition in the Tezuka Award. He later worked as an assistant to established manga creators, including Shinobu Kaitani, Masaya Tokuhiro, and Nobuhiro Watsuki. His time with Watsuki on Rurouni Kenshin coincided with the development of ideas that would shape his pirate epic.

Before One Piece, Oda published short pieces in Weekly Shonen Jump. A 1996 version of Romance Dawn, his prototype for One Piece, introduced Monkey D. Luffy and a young pirate's quest for freedom. Shueisha began serializing One Piece in Weekly Shonen Jump on July 22, 1997. The series follows Luffy as he gathers the Straw Hat Pirates and sails the Grand Line toward the legendary treasure known as the One Piece, seeking the title of Pirate King. Its setting combines slapstick comedy, elaborate world building, political conflict, and long-running mysteries about the Void Century and the “Will of D.”

Oda structured the story in large arcs, beginning with East Blue and continuing through Alabasta, Skypiea, Water Seven, Enies Lobby, Thriller Bark, Marineford, Dressrosa, Whole Cake Island, Wano Country, and Egghead. The manga's distinctive characters include swordsman Roronoa Zoro, navigator Nami, cook Sanji, doctor Tony Tony Chopper, archaeologist Nico Robin, shipwright Franky, musician Brook, helmsman Jinbe, and Usopp, the crew's sharpshooter. Oda regularly uses cover stories and reader question-and-answer columns, called SBS, to add details outside the main chapters.

Toei Animation premiered its television anime adaptation in Japan in October 1999, turning Oda's pages into a separate long-running production. Oda has also contributed directly to selected films: he served as story and character designer for One Piece Film: Strong World (2009) and was involved as an executive producer on One Piece Film: Red (2022). The live-action One Piece series launched by Netflix in 2023; Oda was an executive producer and publicly stressed the importance of faithful casting and production decisions.

In 2015, Guinness World Records recognized One Piece for the most copies published for the same comic book series by a single author. By 2022, Shueisha reported more than 500 million copies in circulation worldwide. Oda is still its sole credited creator today.
