Revolutionary Girl Utena

Revolutionary Girl Utena is a 39-episode Japanese television anime created by Be-Papas and directed by Kunihiko Ikuhara, originally broadcast on TV Tokyo from April to December 1997. The series follows Utena Tenjou, a middle-school student who wears a boys’ uniform and has been inspired by a prince who comforted her after her parents’ deaths. She enters Ohtori Academy, where a signet ring links her to the Student Council and to ritualized sword duels held in an arena above the school. Its visual language combines school melodrama, theatrical symbolism, and recurring imagery of roses, elevators, shadows, and revolving architectural spaces throughout.

Utena’s first duel begins when she defends Anthy Himemiya from Kyouichi Saionji. Anthy is called the Rose Bride and is treated as the prize of the duels; the victor becomes engaged to her and gains access to her extraordinary power. Utena wins using the Sword of Dios, then repeatedly resists the system that reduces Anthy to an object. Her opponents include Student Council members Miki Kaoru, Juri Arisugawa, and Nanami Kiryuu, as well as Touga Kiryuu and Saionji. The plots of individual episodes connect rivalries and desires to the academy’s larger structure of control rather than ordinary romance or friendship.

Akio Ohtori, the academy’s acting chairman and Anthy’s older brother, gradually emerges as the force organizing the duels. He invokes “the power to revolutionize the world,” a promise tied to Dios, the idealized prince remembered by Utena. As the story approaches its conclusion, Utena learns that Anthy has endured abuse and scapegoating within Akio’s order. The final television episodes turn the dueling framework into a direct confrontation over whether Anthy can leave the role imposed upon her. Utena’s attempt to reach Anthy in the closing arc gives the series its central emotional resolution. It also leaves several symbols deliberately unresolved.

The anime was produced by J.C.Staff, while a manga version, credited to Be-Papas and illustrated by Chiho Saito, ran in Shogakukan’s Ciao magazine. The television series is especially associated with its stylized duels, in which contestants fight beside a floating castle and the losing duelist receives a rose cut from their chest. Music by J.A. Seazer accompanies much of the ritual, including the choral “Zettai Unmei Mokushiroku.” Ikuhara later directed the 1999 feature film Adolescence of Utena, a separate retelling that revises characters and events rather than simply continuing the television ending. The show remains influential for unconventional gender treatment.
