Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki is a Japanese television anime adapted from Yuki Yaku’s light-novel series, illustrated by Fly. Its Japanese title, Jaku-Chara Tomozaki-kun, refers to Fumiya Tomozaki, a high-school student who considers real life an unfairly designed game. Online, however, he is the celebrated top player “nanashi” in the competitive game Attack Families, usually shortened to Atafami. The series begins when nanashi agrees to meet Atafami’s second-ranked player, “NO NAME,” and discovers that she is his impeccably capable classmate Aoi Hinami. Rather than sharing his pessimism, Aoi insists that life can be learned, optimized, and cleared through deliberate practice.

Aoi becomes Tomozaki’s self-appointed coach, assigning him social “quests” such as improving his appearance, initiating conversations, joining activities, and setting personal goals. Their lessons introduce the show’s central tension: Aoi’s methods can be effective, but Tomozaki gradually questions whether changing to satisfy other people’s expectations means sacrificing authenticity. The ensemble includes Tomozaki’s outspoken friend Takahiro Mizusawa, reserved classmate Fuka Kikuchi, energetic gamer Hanabi Natsubayashi, popular student Yuzu Izumi, and Erika Konno, whose conflict with Yuzu becomes a major storyline. The anime treats friendships, school elections, dating, bullying, and self-presentation as concrete challenges in Tomozaki’s evolving “game” of life.

The first television season was produced by Project No. 9 and directed by Shinsuke Yanagi, with Fumihiko Shimo handling series composition, Akane Yano designing the characters, and Hiromi Mizutani composing the music. It aired in Japan from January 8 to March 26, 2021, for twelve episodes. Two additional original video animation episodes followed in May and June 2021. Gen Sato voices Fumiya Tomozaki, while Hisako Kanemoto voices Aoi Hinami. The production’s opening theme, “Life Easy?”, is performed by DIALOGUE+. Its ending theme, “Ayafuwa Asterisk,” is also performed by DIALOGUE+, connecting the adaptation’s music to the voice-actor unit associated with the project.

A second season, Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki 2nd Stage, continued the adaptation. It broadcast from January 4 through March 28, 2024, and ran for thirteen episodes. Yanagi returned as director and Shimo again supervised the series scripts. In this continuation, Tomozaki’s progress is no longer limited to social exercises: the narrative gives weight to the student-council election and to the contrasting values of Aoi, Fuka, and the other classmates. The title’s appeal lies in its use of game vocabulary as Tomozaki’s framework for testing strategies, accepting setbacks, and deciding what kind of player he wants to be.
