Sophia Lillis

Sophia Lillis is an American actor born on February 13, 2002, in Brooklyn, New York. She became widely known after playing Beverly Marsh in Andy Muschietti’s 2017 adaptation of Stephen King’s It. In that film, Beverly is the sole girl in the Losers Club, the group of Derry children confronting Pennywise, the shapeshifting entity played by Bill Skarsgård. Lillis returned as the younger Beverly in It Chapter Two (2019), which alternates between the characters’ childhood and adulthood. Her television work includes HBO’s Sharp Objects (2018), adapted from Gillian Flynn’s novel. Lillis portrayed teenage Camille Preaker, the younger version of Amy Adams’s reporter character, in flashbacks tied to Camille’s traumatic upbringing in Wind Gap, Missouri. She then led Netflix’s I Am Not Okay with This (2020) as Sydney Novak, a teenager whose anger and grief accompany the emergence of telekinetic abilities. The series was based on Charles Forsman’s graphic novel and cancelled after one season. She starred as Gretel in Oz Perkins’s Gretel & Hansel (2020), a dark retelling of the Brothers Grimm tale in which Gretel and her brother encounter a witch in the woods. In Alan Ball’s 2020 film Uncle Frank, she played Betty, a teenager who travels with her uncle Frank and his partner Wally from South Carolina to a family funeral. In Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley’s Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023), Lillis played Doric, a tiefling druid who can Wild Shape into animals and joins Edgin Darvis’s effort to recover his daughter Kira and stop Forge Fitzwilliam and Sofina. Her castmates included Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, and Hugh Grant. Lillis also starred as the title character in Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase (2019), directed by Katt Shea. The film follows Nancy, her friends Bess Marvin and George Fayne, and her father, Carson Drew, as they investigate reports that a house is haunted. It draws its title from the second Nancy Drew mystery book, The Hidden Staircase, published under the pseudonym Carolyn Keene. She also appeared as Shelly in Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City (2023), an ensemble film set in a fictional desert town during a Junior Stargazer convention. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2023. Muschietti’s It was released by Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema and became a major box-office success, while its 2019 sequel reunited Lillis with Finn Wolfhard, Jaeden Martell, and Jeremy Ray Taylor again.
