Luis Suárez Díaz was born on January 24, 1987, in Salto, Uruguay. A striker known for sharp movement, finishing, and relentless pressing, he began his senior career with Nacional in Montevideo. After helping Nacional win the Uruguayan league, he moved to Groningen in the Netherlands in 2006. His next club, Ajax, became the setting for his breakout. Suárez scored 111 goals in 159 competitive appearances for Ajax and captained the side. In the 2009-10 Eredivisie, he scored 35 league goals and was named Dutch Footballer of the Year. Ajax also won the KNVB Cup in 2010, with Suárez central. Liverpool signed him from Ajax in January 2011. He won the League Cup in 2012, but his English career included lengthy disciplinary cases. In 2011, he received an eight-match ban and fine after being found guilty by the Football Association of racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra. In 2013, he was banned for ten matches for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanović. During 2013-14, though, Suárez scored 31 Premier League goals in 33 matches, sharing the European Golden Shoe with Cristiano Ronaldo and winning the PFA Players' Player of the Year and FWA Footballer of the Year. Liverpool finished second season. Barcelona signed Suárez in 2014, after FIFA imposed a four-month football ban for biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup. At Barcelona, he formed a prolific attacking trio with Lionel Messi and Neymar. In 2014-15, Barcelona won La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the UEFA Champions League; Suárez scored in the Champions League final against Juventus. He helped Barcelona win La Liga title in 2015-16, when he scored 40 league goals, and won the European Golden Shoe. Across six Barcelona seasons, he scored 198 goals in 283 appearances and became one of the club's most productive forwards. After leaving Barcelona in 2020, Suárez joined Atlético Madrid and scored 21 league goals as the club won La Liga in 2020-21. He returned to Nacional in 2022, winning the Uruguayan championship before joining Grêmio in Brazil. With Uruguay, Suárez has played at multiple World Cups and Copa América tournaments. He was instrumental in Uruguay's 2011 Copa América triumph, scoring against Peru in the semifinal and against Paraguay in the final. He is Uruguay's leading men's international scorer and became the first Uruguayan to reach 100 national-team appearances. His infamous 2010 handball against Ghana preceded Uruguay's dramatic penalty shootout victory.
