Lily James is an English actor whose screen career has moved between period drama, musical cinema, television biography, comedy, and independent film. Born Lily Chloe Ninette Thomson on 5 April 1989 in Esher, Surrey, she trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, graduating in 2010. She adopted the professional name Lily James in tribute to her father, James Thomson, who died in 2008.
Her early television work included the BBC adaptation of Just William and a role in Secret Diary of a Call Girl. She became widely known through Downton Abbey, joining the ITV drama in its third series as Lady Rose MacClare. Rose arrives at Downton as the lively, socially adventurous niece of Violet Crawley, and James remained part of the ensemble through the programme’s 2015 conclusion.
James took the title role in Kenneth Branagh’s 2015 live-action Cinderella. Her Ella is a young woman left in the care of her cruel stepmother, Lady Tremaine, played by Cate Blanchett, before meeting Prince Kit, played by Richard Madden. The film retained the fairy tale’s central injunction to “have courage and be kind,” while expanding Ella’s relationship with her parents and her reasons for remaining at her childhood home.
In 2016, she played Natasha Rostova in the BBC’s six-part adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace. She later appeared as Debora, the waitress and love interest of Ansel Elgort’s getaway driver, in Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver. Her other 2017 role was Elizabeth Layton, Winston Churchill’s secretary, in Joe Wright’s Darkest Hour, opposite Gary Oldman as Churchill.
James embraced musical material as the younger Donna Sheridan in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, performing songs including “Andante, Andante” and “Mamma Mia” in the film’s flashback story. In Ben Wheatley’s Rebecca, adapted from Daphne du Maurier’s novel, she played the unnamed second Mrs de Winter, who enters Manderley under the shadow of her husband’s dead first wife.
Her television performance as Pamela Anderson in Hulu’s Pam & Tommy brought major awards recognition. The 2022 limited series dramatizes the theft and distribution of the private tape made by Anderson and Tommy Lee, played by Sebastian Stan. James received Primetime Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for the role. She subsequently played Zoe, a documentary filmmaker skeptical of arranged marriage, in Shekhar Kapur’s romantic comedy What’s Love Got to Do with It?, and Pam Adkisson in Sean Durkin’s The Iron Claw, the film about the Von Erich wrestling family.
