James Wan is an Australian filmmaker, screenwriter, and producer best known for shaping modern horror cinema and for directing major studio action films. Born on February 26, 1977, in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia, he moved with his family to Australia at age seven. He studied at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, where he met Leigh Whannell. Their collaboration became one of the most influential partnerships in contemporary horror.

Wan and Whannell created Saw, initially developing it as a short film and then expanding it into a feature. Wan directed the 2004 film, while Whannell wrote the screenplay and played Adam Stanheight. Saw follows two strangers chained inside a grimy bathroom by the serial killer known as Jigsaw, whose elaborate moral tests established the franchise’s central premise. Made on a limited budget, the film became a commercial success and launched a long-running series. Wan later returned as an executive producer on several Saw sequels.

He directed Insidious in 2010, again working with Whannell, who wrote the screenplay. The film follows the Lambert family after their son Dalton falls into an unexplained coma and becomes connected to a dangerous supernatural realm called “the Further.” Insidious became another successful horror franchise, although Wan did not direct every installment.

Wan’s collaboration with producer Jason Blum and actors Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga led to The Conjuring in 2013. Based on the claimed investigations of Ed and Lorraine Warren, the film centers on the Perron family’s experiences in a Rhode Island farmhouse. Its success produced a broader Conjuring universe, including Annabelle and The Nun. Wan directed The Conjuring 2 in 2016, which depicts the Enfield poltergeist case in England and brings back Wilson and Farmiga as the Warrens.

Beyond horror, Wan directed Furious 7, released in 2015. The film was completed after the death of star Paul Walker during production and became one of the highest-grossing movies of its year. Wan then directed Aquaman, released in 2018, starring Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry. The film grossed more than one billion dollars worldwide and became a major milestone for DC’s cinematic releases.

Wan has also produced films and television projects through Atomic Monster, the production company he founded. His work is marked by carefully constructed suspense, recurring collaborations, and an ability to move from intimate supernatural stories to large-scale blockbusters without abandoning genre-driven storytelling.
