Dan Stevens is an English actor whose career has moved between period drama, fantasy, television, comedy, and film. He was born in Croydon, London, on October 10, 1982. Adopted as a baby, he grew up in Wales and southeast England, and studied English literature at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. While at Cambridge, he performed with the Marlowe Society, an experience that preceded his professional stage work. His early credits included productions with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre, where he played in Peter Hall's production of "The Rose Tattoo." Stevens became widely known through television as Matthew Crawley in "Downton Abbey." He joined Julian Fellowes's period drama in its first season in 2010. Matthew, the heir to the Earl of Grantham, marries Lady Mary and faces the pressures of inheritance, class, family duty, and personal loss. The character's story ended with Matthew's death in the 2012 season finale, after Stevens left the series to pursue other roles. In 2014, he played Beast opposite Emma Watson's Belle in Disney's live-action "Beauty and the Beast," directed by Bill Condon. Released in 2017, the film became a major worldwide success and introduced Stevens's singing to a broad international audience. His performance combined the enchanted prince's arrogance with remorse, while the production used motion-capture effects for the Beast. Stevens also played David Haller in FX's "Legion," Noah Hawley's unconventional Marvel series based on the X-Men character. The show premiered in 2017, presenting Haller as a powerful mutant whose apparent mental illness is entangled with reality, manipulation, and trauma. Across three seasons, he shifted among fractured identities, hallucinations, and physical transformations, making the role one of his most demanding television performances. His film work includes "The Guest," Adam Wingard's 2014 action thriller, in which he plays a mysterious former soldier who enters a grieving family's life. He later appeared in "Apostle," a 2018 horror film directed by Gareth Evans, playing Thomas Richardson, a man infiltrating a remote island cult to rescue his sister. In comedy, he starred as the historian Matthew McConnell in Netflix's "Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga" (2020), alongside Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams. Stevens has also worked in limited series, including Hulu's "The Mysterious Benedict Society," where he played the eccentric Mr. Benedict and his dangerous twin Mr. Curtain. Beyond acting, he narrated audiobooks and recorded Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" for Audible, showing his wide literary range and versatility.
