Rogue is the X-Men character whose defining conflict is involuntary intimacy. Born Anna Marie in Mississippi, she can absorb another person’s memories, personality, and powers through skin-to-skin contact. The ability makes an embrace potentially traumatic, so her gloves are not merely part of her costume: they are a practical boundary.

Rogue first appeared in Avengers Annual #10 (1981), written by Chris Claremont and drawn by Michael Golden. She debuted as a teenage supervillain recruited by Mystique into the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Her most consequential early act was attacking Carol Danvers, then Ms. Marvel. Rogue absorbed Danvers’s memories and powers, leaving Danvers comatose and giving Rogue extraordinary strength, durability, flight, and a partly permanent psychological imprint of Danvers. This event eventually brought Rogue to Professor Xavier’s school, after Danvers urged the X-Men to accept her.

Her redemption is not presented as a clean reset. Rogue struggles with guilt, stolen memories, and fear of harming people she touches. In the celebrated “Savage Land” stories, her powers and identity remain entangled with the consciousness she has absorbed. Later, the relationship between Rogue and Gambit becomes a central X-Men romance, complicated because his own past includes the Mutant Massacre: he helped assemble the Marauders for Mister Sinister, though he claimed not to know the massacre’s full purpose. Rogue eventually chooses trust over secrecy, and their marriage is depicted in X-Men Gold #30 (2018).

Rogue has also carried unusual power combinations. During the “Inferno” era, she fought alongside the X-Men while struggling against demonic corruption of New York; in “Age of Apocalypse,” an alternate timeline, she is married to Magneto and helps lead the resistance. These stories demonstrate that absorption is not a simple strength upgrade: Rogue can inherit skills, emotional patterns, and physical abilities, sometimes losing herself in the process.

In live action, Anna Paquin portrayed Rogue in the original X-Men film (2000) and its sequels X2 (2003) and X-Men: The Last Stand (2006). Those films emphasize her teenage isolation and romance with Iceman, while omitting much of the comics’ Carol Danvers history. In comics, however, Rogue develops from an antagonist defined by violation into a disciplined team leader. Her power remains dangerous, but her most important achievement is learning that responsibility can coexist with intimacy. That tension — between wanting connection and fearing contact — is the specific engine of Rogue’s enduring story, from her villainous debut through her life as an X-Men leader.
