Pamela Voorhees is the central human antagonist of *Friday the 13th* (1980), the first film in the horror series. Played by Betsy Palmer, she is introduced as a helpful local woman who arrives at Camp Crystal Lake while counselors are preparing to reopen it. The counselors initially believe the killer is a man. The film’s final confrontation reveals that Pamela, not her son Jason, has been killing them.
Pamela’s actions are tied to the history of the camp. In 1957, Jason drowned at Crystal Lake while the counselors on duty were distracted. The camp later closed after a series of tragedies, including murders in 1958 and a fire in 1962. When Steve Christy attempts to reopen it in 1979, Pamela returns to prevent the camp from operating again. She kills the new counselors one by one, including Annie, the first counselor seen in the film, and Steve himself.
The film presents Pamela as a mother who has made Jason’s death the center of her life. She speaks to herself in Jason’s voice during the killings, repeating his supposed demand for revenge. In the final sequence, surviving counselor Alice Hardy decapitates her with a machete. Alice then drifts into Crystal Lake in a canoe, where Jason suddenly rises from the water and pulls her under. The ending leaves Jason’s appearance ambiguous: Alice later says she saw a young boy, while police find no trace of him.
Pamela’s role was designed as the explanation for the murders in the original film, which was written by Victor Miller and directed by Sean S. Cunningham. Jason became the series’ recurring killer in later installments, but Pamela remains essential to the franchise’s origin story. *Friday the 13th Part 2* (1981) expands her history: Jason survived the drowning and grew up living in the woods near the lake. In that sequel, he kills Alice at the beginning, and his mother’s severed head is displayed in his shack as a reminder of her influence.
Betsy Palmer later recalled accepting the role largely because she needed money to buy a car. She initially regarded the film as a modest job rather than a major production. Its commercial success and lasting place in horror cinema made Pamela Voorhees one of the genre’s recognizable maternal killers. Unlike the later image of Jason wearing a hockey mask, Pamela’s threat in the first film comes from her ordinary appearance, her intimate knowledge of the camp, and the personal grievance she uses to justify the murders.
