Mike Wheeler is a central character in Netflix’s Stranger Things, created by the Duffer Brothers and portrayed by Finn Wolfhard. He lives in Hawkins, Indiana, where, in 1983, his close friend Will Byers disappears after encountering a monster from an alternate dimension called the Upside Down. Mike, Lucas Sinclair, and Dustin Henderson begin searching for Will themselves. During that search, Mike finds a frightened girl with a shaved head, whom he calls Eleven because of the number tattooed on her arm. He shelters her in his family’s basement and learns that she has psychokinetic abilities and ties to Hawkins Laboratory. Mike’s bond with Eleven becomes central to the first season. He refuses to abandon her even when adults dismiss the children’s account of Will’s disappearance. After Eleven helps locate Will through a sensory deprivation tank built at Hawkins Middle School, Mike and his friends assist in confronting the Demogorgon. Eleven destroys the creature at Hawkins Middle, then vanishes. Will is rescued, but Mike continues hoping she survived. In the following year, he meets her secretly in the woods after she returns from the Upside Down. Their relationship becomes part of his story through the later seasons of the series. In the third season, set in 1985, Mike is among the young people targeted by the Mind Flayer. He spends time with Eleven, provoking concern from her adoptive father, Jim Hopper. His arguments with Eleven and Max Mayfield expose his insecurity and his difficulty saying what he feels. Nevertheless, he joins his friends in fighting the creature assembled from flayed Hawkins residents at Starcourt Mall. After the battle, the Byers family leaves Hawkins with Eleven. Mike promises to maintain their relationship despite the distance. He also says he loves her, though their future remains uncertain as the group separates that autumn. Season four places Mike in California during spring 1986, visiting Eleven, who lives with Will, Jonathan, and Joyce Byers in Lenora Hills. He is unaware that Eleven has been bullied at school and no longer possesses her powers. After agents take Eleven away, Mike, Will, Jonathan, and Jonathan’s friend Argyle travel across the country to find her. They eventually reach a Nevada pizza restaurant, where Mike speaks to Eleven during her psychic confrontation with Vecna. His declaration of love helps her resist Vecna’s attack on Max. Mike later returns to Hawkins and sees the town damaged by rifts opening wide.
