John Constantine first appeared in DC Comics’ *The Saga of the Swamp Thing* #37 in 1985. Writer Alan Moore introduced him during his run on the series, with artists Stephen Bissette and John Totleben involved in the character’s creation. Constantine was an English occult investigator who seemed to know more about the supernatural crisis facing Alec Holland, the Swamp Thing, than he was willing to explain. His appearances led to *Hellblazer*, a solo series launched in 1988 under DC’s Vertigo imprint. Jamie Delano wrote its early issues, establishing the combination of magic, politics, horror, and costly personal decisions that defined the book.

Constantine’s past is central to many of those stories. He had performed in a punk band called Mucous Membrane before becoming deeply involved in occult affairs. At Newcastle, an attempt to deal with a demon haunting a young girl named Astra Logue ended disastrously: Astra was taken to Hell. Constantine’s guilt over the incident, and his subsequent confinement at Ravenscar psychiatric hospital, recur throughout *Hellblazer*. He is capable of confronting demons, but his plans often depend on deception and leave other people to bear the consequences.

One of his best-known stories is Garth Ennis’s *Dangerous Habits*. After years of smoking, Constantine is diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. Rather than accept the death awaiting him, he maneuvers rival rulers of Hell into claiming his soul. If he dies, their competing claims threaten a conflict none of them wants, giving them reason to keep him alive. The storyline captures a distinctive part of Constantine’s methods: he survives not by overpowering supernatural beings, but by finding a weakness in their bargains and exploiting it. The original *Hellblazer* series concluded with issue #300 in 2013.

Constantine has also appeared outside that series. In Neil Gaiman’s *The Sandman*, he helps Dream recover a pouch of stolen sand from Constantine’s former girlfriend Rachel. He later became a member of Justice League Dark in DC Comics. Adaptations have interpreted him differently: Keanu Reeves played a Los Angeles-based version in the 2005 film *Constantine*, while Matt Ryan portrayed the English character in the 2014 NBC television series and subsequently on *Legends of Tomorrow*. Across these versions, the trench coat and cigarettes remain recognizable details, but the comics’ longer history gives them weight: they belong to a man whose clever escapes rarely undo the damage that brought him into danger in the first place.
