When the Camellia Blooms

When the Camellia Blooms is a 2019 South Korean television drama broadcast by KBS2 from September 18 to November 21. Written by Lim Sang-choon and directed by Cha Young-hoon, it was scheduled as 40 half-hour episodes, commonly presented internationally as 20 longer installments. The series stars Gong Hyo-jin as Oh Dong-baek, a single mother who runs a bar and eatery called Camellia in the fictional town of Ongsan. Kang Ha-neul plays Hwang Yong-sik, an earnest local police officer whose open admiration for Dong-baek drives much of the romantic story. Its Korean title, Dongbaek Kkot Pil Muryeop, literally refers to the time camellia flowers bloom.

Before Yong-sik arrives, Dong-baek has endured years of judgment from Ongsan residents because she is unmarried and raising her son Pil-gu alone. The drama follows her changing confidence as Yong-sik persistently supports her, despite disapproval from his mother, Kwak Deok-soon, played by Go Doo-shim. Dong-baek's former partner, baseball player Kang Jong-ryeol, portrayed by Kim Ji-seok, later re-enters Pil-gu's life. The story also gives substantial attention to Dong-baek's mother, Jeong-eun, played by Lee Jung-eun, whose past separation from her daughter and illness reshape their relationship. Alongside its romance and neighborhood comedy, the show builds a crime plot around an unidentified murderer known as the Joker, who threatens Dong-baek after a killing connected to Camellia.

At the 2019 KBS Drama Awards, the production received the Grand Prize, or Daesang, for Gong Hyo-jin, while Kang Ha-neul won the Excellence Award for an actor in a miniseries. The drama itself was named Best Drama. In 2020, it won the Grand Prize for Television at the 56th Baeksang Arts Awards, and Kang Ha-neul received the Baeksang television Best Actor award for Yong-sik. Lim Sang-choon also won Baeksang's Best Screenplay award. These honors recognized a series that combined a small-town ensemble, a maternal reunion story, romantic pursuit, and a suspense thread rather than treating its central couple as its only narrative concern.

Supporting roles include Oh Jung-se as Ongsan's frequently comic local politician No Gyu-tae and Yeom Hye-ran as his wife, Hong Ja-young. Son Dam-bi plays Jessica, Jong-ryeol's wife. The drama's setting is crucial: Camellia is both Dong-baek's workplace and the place where residents gather, gossip, eat, and confront her. By placing a single mother, a police officer, and a frightened child at the center of Ongsan, the series repeatedly connects private choices to the town's scrutiny and protection in meaningful ways.
