Percy Jackson and the Olympians is a Disney+ fantasy television series based on Rick Riordan’s bestselling novel series of the same name. Its first season adapts The Lightning Thief, the 2005 opening book, and premiered on December 19, 2023, with its eight-episode finale released on January 30, 2024. Riordan co-created the series with Jonathan E. Steinberg and served as an executive producer, giving the author a direct role in a screen adaptation of his work after the earlier film versions. Walker Scobell plays Percy Jackson, a twelve-year-old boy who learns that he is a demigod: the son of Poseidon, Greek god of the sea. Percy has spent years being misunderstood because of dyslexia, ADHD, and apparent trouble at school, traits the story reframes as signs of a demigod’s ability to read Ancient Greek and react to danger. After a confrontation with his teacher, who is revealed to be the Fury Alecto, Percy is taken to Camp Half-Blood, a protected training ground for the children of Greek gods. At camp, Percy meets Annabeth Chase, daughter of Athena, played by Leah Sava Jeffries, and Grover Underwood, his satyr protector, played by Aryan Simhadri. The trio travels across the United States after Zeus accuses Percy of stealing his master bolt, a weapon capable of beginning a war among the Olympian gods. Their quest includes a visit to Medusa’s Garden Gnome Emporium, an encounter with the Chimera at the Gateway Arch, and a dangerous stay at the Lotus Casino in Las Vegas, where visitors lose track of time. The series’ mythology is tied closely to modern American locations. Mount Olympus is situated above the Empire State Building in New York City, while the entrance to the Underworld is located in Los Angeles. Percy’s journey is also personal: he wants to rescue his mother, Sally Jackson, who appears to have been killed by the Minotaur while protecting him. Virginia Kull plays Sally, and Glynn Turman portrays Chiron, the centaur who works at Percy’s school under the name Mr. Brunner before revealing his true identity. The first season concludes with Percy returning Zeus’s bolt and discovering that Luke Castellan, played by Charlie Bushnell, was responsible for stealing it. Luke’s betrayal establishes the wider conflict involving Kronos, the Titan who seeks revenge on the Olympian gods. Disney+ renewed Percy Jackson and the Olympians for a second season in February 2024; it is set to adapt Riordan’s second novel, The Sea of Monsters.
