Heroes is an American science fiction television series created by Tim Kring that premiered on NBC on September 25, 2006. The premise follows ordinary people around the world who discover extraordinary abilities and gradually become connected by a larger struggle. The show introduced cheerleader Claire Bennet, whose regeneration made her difficult to kill, and Hiro Nakamura, who could bend space-time. Milo Ventimiglia played Peter Petrelli, a hospice nurse who absorbed other abilities, while Hayden Panettiere portrayed Claire throughout original series. Masi Oka's Hiro traveled from Tokyo to New York after seeing a newspaper, and his storyline supplied the show's optimism. Zachary Quinto played Sylar, a serial killer who murdered powered people to understand their abilities and became its main antagonist. The first season, titled Genesis, centered on an explosion in New York and warning: “Save the cheerleader, save the world.” That season earned ratings and critical attention, but the series faced complicated mythology, changing creative direction, and declining audience numbers. NBC renewed Heroes for a second season, which was shortened by the 2007–08 Writers Guild of America strike. The shortened season shifted toward a virus plot involving the Company, an organization that had secretly monitored and manipulated many powered individuals. Heroes also used graphic novel chapters, flashbacks, and multiple timelines to reveal connections among characters while expanding its superhero-inspired mythology. Its ensemble included Greg Grunberg as Matt Parkman, who could hear thoughts, and Jack Coleman as morally conflicted Noah Bennet. Kristen Bell appeared as Elle Bishop, while Santiago Cabrera played Isaac Mendez, an artist whose paintings depicted events before occurring. The show's season received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Drama Series, and Oka earned a supporting-actor nomination from television voters. After season two, NBC continued the program through four seasons, ending its broadcast on February 8, 2010, after seventy-seven episodes. The cancellation did not end the franchise: NBC announced Heroes Reborn, a thirteen-episode limited series that premiered in September 2015. Reborn introduced characters and returned Jack Coleman as Noah Bennet, linking its story to the series without restoring ensemble from before. Critics regarded the first season as strongest, while later installments drew criticism for uneven plotting and complex mythology among reviewers. Nevertheless, Heroes helped renew mainstream television interest in serialized superhero drama before Marvel's interconnected series dominated popular culture afterward. Its catchphrases, evolving powers, and character-centered structure remain recognizable within 2000s television history and superhero genre development in popular culture.
