Heartstopper

Heartstopper is a British coming-of-age television series based on Alice Oseman’s webcomic and graphic-novel series of the same name. Developed and written by Oseman, it premiered on Netflix on 22 April 2022. The story begins at the fictional Truham Grammar School for Boys, where Charlie Spring, an openly gay Year 10 student, is assigned to sit beside rugby player Nick Nelson in form class. Charlie has been bullied after being outed, while Nick initially identifies as straight and is dating popular student Imogen Heaney. Joe Locke plays Charlie, and Kit Connor plays Nick. Their friendship grows through shared lunches, snow days, and Charlie’s involvement with the rugby team, before Nick recognizes that he is bisexual. The first season follows Nick’s difficult but increasingly confident process of telling people close to him, including his mother, Sarah Nelson, played by Olivia Colman. It ends with Nick telling Charlie that he has come out to his mother and with the pair becoming a couple. Supporting characters include Yasmin Finney’s Elle Argent, William Gao’s Tao Xu, Corinna Brown’s Tara Jones, Kizzy Edgell’s Darcy Olsson, and Tobie Donovan’s Isaac Henderson. Season two, released on 3 August 2023, adapts further material from Oseman’s books and takes the friends to Paris on a school trip. Nick and Charlie navigate being together in public, while Elle and Tao begin a relationship and Tara and Darcy confront pressures within their own. The season also introduces Nick’s older brother, David Nelson, played by Jack Barton, and gives greater attention to Charlie’s mental health. The episode “Promise” depicts Charlie disclosing that he has an eating disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder to Nick. The series was produced by See-Saw Films and received a rapid renewal: Netflix ordered second and third seasons in May 2022. Season three premiered on 3 October 2024, with an eight-episode run that continues Charlie’s recovery and follows Nick as he considers university plans. Oseman has appeared on screen as a teacher at Truham, and the show’s soundtrack has featured artists including Baby Queen, whose music is closely associated with its early episodes. At the 2023 Children’s and Family Emmy Awards, Heartstopper won the award for Young Teen Series, and Locke won for Lead Performance. Its central romance is distinguished by Oseman’s direct adaptation of characters she originally created in the webcomic. The production uses Oseman’s recognizable hand-drawn leaf imagery in transitions throughout its episodes, echoing the comics’ visual language consistently.
