Toshiyuki Kubooka

Toshiyuki Kubooka is a Japanese animator, character designer, and director whose career spans television series, theatrical features, and original video animation. Born on January 19, 1963, he became associated with Gainax during the studio's formative period and contributed as an animator to projects that helped define late twentieth-century anime production. His early credits include work on Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise and the television series Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, both important Gainax productions. Kubooka is especially recognizable for his character design work on Yasuhiro Imagawa's Giant Robo OVA, Giant Robo: The Day the Earth Stood Still. Released across seven episodes from 1992 to 1998, the series reworked characters created by manga pioneer Mitsuteru Yokoyama and gave them a bold, retro-inflected visual identity. Kubooka designed the central cast, including Daisaku Kusama and GinRei, for a production celebrated for its orchestral scale and densely interconnected conflicts. The 1994 companion OVA GinRei returned to that setting, presenting comic and musical variations on Giant Robo's characters. As a director, Kubooka led Sunrise's 2007 television adaptation of The Idolmaster. The twenty-five-episode series follows the performers of 765 Production as they pursue idol careers, and it predates later anime adaptations of Bandai Namco's game franchise. He subsequently directed the three Berserk: The Golden Age Arc films: The Egg of the King, The Battle for Doldrey, and The Advent. Produced by Studio 4°C and released from 2012 through 2013, the films adapt Kentaro Miura's Golden Age storyline, focusing on Guts, Griffith, and the Band of the Hawk. Kubooka returned to television direction with Harukana Receive, a 2018 adaptation of Nyoijizai's manga about high school beach volleyball players in Okinawa. In 2020, he directed Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina, adapting Jougi Shiraishi's light novel series about the traveling witch Elaina. The series was animated by C2C and ran for twelve episodes. In 2024, he directed Mysterious Disappearances, also known by its Japanese title Kaii to Otome to Kamikakushi. Animated by Zero-G, the television adaptation follows writer Sumireko Ogawa and middle school student Ren Adashino as they investigate supernatural incidents. Kubooka's directing credits therefore extend from an idol franchise and Miura's dark fantasy to sports comedy, light-novel fantasy, and contemporary occult mystery. His career also includes animation and design roles, rather than direction alone, on productions associated with the studios in which he worked over more than four decades of Japanese animation.
