Pedro Geromel

Pedro Tonon Geromel was born on 21 September 1985, in São Paulo, Brazil. A centre-back, he developed in Palmeiras’ youth system before beginning his professional career in Portugal with Vitória de Guimarães. He made his Primeira Liga debut in 2005-06, and became a regular as Vitória finished third in the 2007-08 league season, a placing that took the club into the UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds. In 2008, Geromel moved to Germany to join 1. FC Köln. He spent four seasons there, playing in the Bundesliga before Köln’s relegation in 2012. His next destination was Spain's RCD Mallorca on loan.

He joined Mallorca on loan in 2012, and the move later became permanent. Mallorca were relegated from La Liga at the end of 2012-13, and Geromel subsequently returned to Brazil. Grêmio took him on loan in May 2014, before buying his rights permanently the following year. At the Porto Alegre club, he formed a long-running central-defensive partnership with Argentine defender Walter Kannemann. Their pairing became fundamental during a period in which Grêmio collected major knockout trophies. Geromel also became captain, an especially visible role in the club's Arena do Grêmio era. He wore the armband in numerous decisive matches there.

Geromel started in Grêmio’s 2016 Copa do Brasil triumph, which ended the club’s 15-year wait for the national cup. In 2017, he was a key member of the side that beat Lanús in the Copa Libertadores final, winning 1-0 in Porto Alegre and 2-1 in Argentina. The victory delivered Grêmio’s third Libertadores crown, following the titles of 1983 and 1995. He then helped secure the 2018 Recopa Sudamericana against Independiente, after the two-legged tie was decided on penalties. Grêmio also won Campeonato Gaúcho titles during his tenure, including the 2018 championship. His league form earned three consecutive Bola de Prata selections.

His Grêmio performances brought recognition from Brazil coach Tite. Geromel was selected for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, although he did not play during the tournament. He made his senior international debut on 11 September 2018, when Brazil beat El Salvador 5-0 in Landover, Maryland. He earned a second cap the following month in a 2-0 friendly victory over Saudi Arabia. His international record therefore consists of two appearances, both made after his World Cup selection. At club level, however, his lasting legacy is inseparable from Grêmio’s modern continental success and from his longevity as Grêmio's defensive leader.
