Mira Sorvino was born in New York City on September 28, 1967, the daughter of actor Paul Sorvino and Lorraine Davis, a drama therapist. She attended Harvard University, where she studied East Asian studies and graduated magna cum laude in 1989. Her undergraduate thesis examined racial conflict in China. After college, Sorvino spent time in Beijing, working for the Chinese government’s Foreign Service before pursuing acting. She began appearing in films in the 1990s, including Whit Stillman’s Barcelona and Robert Redford’s Quiz Show. Those supporting parts preceded the performance that made her an Academy Award winner and established her career. In Woody Allen’s 1995 comedy Mighty Aphrodite, Sorvino played Linda Ash, a Bronx sex worker whom Lenny, played by Allen, tries to transform into the mother for his adopted son. The role earned Sorvino the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. In 1996 she starred with Winona Ryder in Boys, playing an aspiring actress among friends navigating New York after college. Sorvino then became associated with the 1997 comedy Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion. As Romy White, opposite Lisa Kudrow’s Michele Weinberger, she plays one half of a pair who invent a glamorous business success before facing former classmates. Sorvino’s work includes Norma Jean & Marilyn, the 1996 film in which she portrayed Marilyn Monroe while Ashley Judd played Norma Jean Dougherty, Monroe’s identity. Her portrayal brought Sorvino a Golden Globe nomination. She appeared in Mimic in 1997, directed by Guillermo del Toro, and co-starred with Val Kilmer in The Saint. On television, she played immigration agent Kate Morozov in the 2005 miniseries Human Trafficking, which dramatizes trafficking. The performance earned her a Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or Movie. Credits also include the comedy series Modern Family and The Girl Who Believes in Miracles. Beyond acting, Sorvino has undertaken public anti-trafficking advocacy. In 2009 she became a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador for the UN Office on Drugs and Crime. Her work in that role has focused on human trafficking. In 2017 Sorvino was among actresses whose accounts of alleged sexual harassment by producer Harvey Weinstein helped bring public attention to his conduct. She said that she had been blacklisted after rejecting his advances. Sorvino later participated in Time’s Up actions. Her film credits include Sound of Freedom, released in 2023, in which she played Katherine Ballard. Her career covers comedy, horror, television and advocacy.
