Deborah Ann Woll

Deborah Ann Woll is an American actor whose best-known roles place her at the center of two very different television worlds: the supernatural drama *True Blood* and Marvel’s street-level stories set in New York. Born in Brooklyn in 1985, she studied acting at the University of Southern California before beginning her screen career with guest appearances on television.

Woll joined HBO’s *True Blood* in 2008 as Jessica Hamby. Jessica enters the series as a sheltered teenager whom Bill Compton is forced to turn into a vampire. What begins as a punishment for Bill becomes one of the show’s enduring relationships: he must teach Jessica how to live with powers and appetites she never chose. Across the series, Woll plays Jessica’s struggle with her religious upbringing, her growing independence, and her complicated relationships with Hoyt Fortenberry and Jason Stackhouse. She remained with *True Blood* through its seventh and final season in 2014.

In 2015, Woll began playing Karen Page in Netflix’s *Daredevil*. Karen first encounters Matt Murdock and Foggy Nelson after she is framed for a murder connected to corruption at her employer, Union Allied. She later works with their law firm and becomes a reporter for the *New York Bulletin*. The role takes her beyond *Daredevil*: she also appears as Karen in *The Defenders* and *The Punisher*, where Karen’s concern for Frank Castle gives her a connection to a very different vigilante. Woll returned to the character in the 2025 series *Daredevil: Born Again*.

Her film work includes *Ruby Sparks*, the 2012 romantic comedy-drama about a novelist whose written character comes to life. In the 2019 thriller *Escape Room*, she plays Amanda Harper, a military veteran among strangers trapped in a sequence of deadly puzzle rooms. These parts sit alongside a career largely defined by serialized storytelling, in which characters have time to change markedly from their first appearances.

Woll is also closely associated with tabletop role-playing games. She served as dungeon master for *Relics and Rarities*, a filmed *Dungeons & Dragons* series built around her original fantasy adventures. She appeared as the gnome Twiggy in *Critical Role*’s second campaign. Her interest in the game is not simply a promotional sideline: in *Relics and Rarities*, she guides the players through puzzles, characters, and encounters she helped create.

Outside acting, Woll has spoken publicly about choroideremia, an inherited eye condition affecting her husband, E.J. Scott, and has supported efforts to raise awareness of the disease.
