X-Men is a 2000 American superhero film directed by Bryan Singer and written by David Hayter, from a story credited to Hayter and producer Tom DeSanto. Based on Marvel Comics' mutant team created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, it launched the modern X-Men film series. The story introduces mutants, people born with genetic changes that can produce extraordinary abilities, in a society that often fears them. Canadian actor Hugh Jackman made his first appearance as Logan, also called Wolverine, after Dougray Scott left the production because scheduling on Mission: Impossible 2 changed during the film's lengthy shoot in Canada. At a Senate hearing, Senator Robert Kelly advocates a Mutant Registration Act, prompting shape-shifting mutant Mystique to abduct him for Magneto. Magneto, born Erik Lehnsherr, leads the Brotherhood of Mutants and believes human persecution makes coexistence impossible. Professor Charles Xavier runs a school in Westchester County, New York, where he trains mutants and seeks peace. Wolverine and runaway Rogue encounter Xavier's team after Sabretooth attacks them in Canada. Rogue's touch can absorb life force and powers; she injures Wolverine when he rescues her. Xavier recruits Wolverine and Rogue to stay at the mansion, where they meet Cyclops, Storm, and Jean Grey. Magneto's machine at the Statue of Liberty is designed to expose leaders gathered on Ellis Island to radiation that will turn them into mutants. He tests it on Kelly, whose body becomes unstable and dies after returning to Washington. Magneto needs Rogue because her absorption ability can power the device without killing him. Mystique infiltrates Senator Kelly's office and later impersonates Wolverine at Xavier's school, adding distrust among the X-Men. The final confrontation sends Cyclops, Storm, Jean Grey, and Wolverine to Liberty Island, while Sabretooth and Toad defend Magneto. Wolverine frees Rogue, and Magneto is arrested after the machine is destroyed. 20th Century Fox released X-Men in the United States on July 14, 2000. Its principal cast includes Patrick Stewart as Xavier, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Famke Janssen as Jean Grey, James Marsden as Cyclops, Halle Berry as Storm, Anna Paquin as Rogue, and Rebecca Romijn as Mystique. The film also features Ray Park as Toad and Tyler Mane as Sabretooth. Michael Kamen composed the score, and Newton Thomas Sigel served as cinematographer. With a reported production budget of about $75 million, X-Men earned more than $296 million worldwide. It was followed by the sequel X2 in 2003, also directed by Singer.
