Ichigo Kurosaki

Ichigo Kurosaki is the central protagonist of Tite Kubo’s manga Bleach, first serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2001. He is introduced as a fifteen-year-old high school student in Karakura Town who can see ghosts. This ability draws him into contact with Rukia Kuchiki, a Soul Reaper wounded while pursuing the Hollow called Fishbone D. When Rukia cannot finish the fight, Ichigo takes her powers and becomes a substitute Soul Reaper. His orange hair, blunt manner, and fierce protectiveness establish him as a hero whose battles are rooted in defending people near him rather than in seeking rank or glory.

Rukia’s transfer of power carries consequences. Because she loses her own abilities, Soul Society condemns her for an illegal act and sends Byakuya Kuchiki and Renji Abarai to retrieve her. Ichigo enters Soul Society with Uryu Ishida, Yasutora Sado, Orihime Inoue, and Yoruichi Shihouin to rescue Rukia. There he fights Renji and later defeats Kenpachi Zaraki, captain of the Eleventh Division. His confrontation with Byakuya reveals his Bankai, Tensa Zangetsu, a compact black form that greatly increases his speed. The arc establishes Zangetsu as the name of Ichigo’s sword and spirit, while making clear that Hollow influence exists within him.

The Arrancar storyline deepens that conflict. Sosuke Aizen leaves Soul Society and uses the Hogyoku to create powerful Arrancar, including Ulquiorra Cifer and Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez. When Orihime is taken to Hueco Mundo, Ichigo leads a rescue mission into Aizen’s domain. His struggle against Ulquiorra ends with Ichigo transforming into a terrifying Hollow-like state after suffering a fatal wound. In the battle with Aizen, Ichigo learns the Final Getsuga Tensho, an ultimate technique that sacrifices his Soul Reaper powers. He defeats Aizen using Mugetsu, then spends time unable to see spirits or wield Zangetsu. This loss gives the victory a cost.

Ichigo later regains spiritual power through a ritual involving the captains’ reiatsu and confronts Kugo Ginjo, leader of Xcution. In the Thousand-Year Blood War, Kubo’s final manga arc, the Quincy emperor Yhwach invades Soul Society. Ichigo discovers that his mother, Masaki, was a Quincy, while his father, Isshin, is a former Soul Reaper captain. Oetsu Nimaiya forges Ichigo’s renewed twin blades, reflecting the origins of his powers. In the concluding conflict, Ichigo joins Uryu, Aizen, and other allies against Yhwach. He ultimately strikes Yhwach down with a restored Zangetsu, and the epilogue shows Ichigo married to Orihime and raising Kazui.
