Pokémon Horizons: The Series premiered on TV Tokyo in Japan on April 14, 2023, beginning the first main Pokémon animated series not centered on Ash Ketchum and Pikachu. It follows Liko, a quiet girl from the Paldea region, who arrives at Indigo Academy carrying a mysterious pendant once owned by her grandmother, Diana. The pendant attracts the Explorers, an organization seeking its power. When danger follows Liko, she joins the Rising Volt Tacklers, an airborne group traveling aboard the airship Brave Olivine. Her first Pokémon partner is Sprigatito, whose mistrust of strangers and fondness for Liko shape their early relationship. Roy, another young protagonist, lives on an island near Kanto and possesses an Ancient Poké Ball that ultimately houses the small Legendary Pokémon Terapagos. He leaves home after meeting Liko and becomes a Rising Volt Tackler, partnering with Fuecoco. The crew is led in the field by Pokémon Professor Friede, whose partner Charizard can Terastallize, and by Captain Pikachu, a flying-cap-wearing Pikachu that pilots and protects the group. Other regular crew members include Orla, Murdock, Mollie, Ludlow, and the Pokémon Metagross. Their journeys take them through Paldea, Galar, and Kanto as they investigate pendant, ball, and Lucius's ancient lost legacy. The Explorers' early operatives include Amethio, who commands Ceruledge, and the siblings Zirc and Onia. Amethio initially pursues Liko's pendant for Gibeon, the organization's hidden leader, but his role becomes less straightforward as the search reveals connections between the pendant, Terapagos, and Lucius. Lucius was an ancient adventurer associated with six Pokémon called the Six Heroes. His reported destination, the paradise known as Laqua, becomes the central objective of the Rising Volt Tacklers. The story gradually identifies and awakens the heroes, using their memories to uncover what occurred during Lucius's expedition and why Terapagos matters now for every person involved. In 2024, the Japanese series entered its Terastal Debut story, sending Liko, Roy, and fellow student Dot into a structured training program at Naranja Academy in Paldea. Dot, previously known to the others through her online Nidothing persona, travels with Quaxly. This arc connects the show more directly to Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet's Terastal phenomenon, while retaining its original cast and the Lucius mystery. Pokémon Horizons is directed by Saori Den and produced by OLM. The Japanese opening theme for its first arc is Dokimeki Diary, performed by asmi featuring Chinozo. Its debut opens a new franchise television chapter.
