The race for the Oscar for Best International Feature has gained new contenders, with films from France, Spain, Poland, Hong Kong and Jordan among the titles selected for the 99th edition of the awards. The deadline for countries to submit their films is October 1.Highlights include “Fjord,” from Romania, winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes; “The Meltdown,” from Chile, screened in the Un Certain Regard section; and “Everytime,” from Germany, winner of the section’s award. France will be represented by “Minotaur,” winner of the Grand Prix at Cannes. Spain and Poland enter the race with “La Bola Negra” and “Fatherland,” respectively.A new Academy rule also allows films that win the top prize at one of the six major festivals — Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Sundance, Busan and Toronto — to be submitted in the category even without the backing of a national committee.Hong Kong has selected “Sons of the Neon Night,” a thriller written, directed and co-produced by Juno Mak. The cast includes Takeshi Kaneshiro, Sean Lau, Tony Leung Ka-fai, Louis Koo and Gao Yuanyuan. Set in an alternate version of Hong Kong in 1994, the film marked Kaneshiro’s return after an eight-year absence from the screen.The production premiered in the Midnight Screenings section of the Cannes Film Festival in May 2025 and arrived in Hong Kong cinemas in October of the same year. With an estimated budget of US$ 50 million, the film is among the most expensive ever made in the territory. At the Hong Kong Film Awards, it won eight of the 12 categories in which it was nominated.Jordan will be represented by “Sink,” the debut feature from Zain Duraie. Starring Clara Khoury and Mohammad Nizar, the thriller explores family relationships, mental health, social stigma and human connection. The film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in 2025 and was produced by Tabi360.The list of films selected for the shortlist will be announced on December 15, while the Oscar nominations will be revealed on January 21.
