The Sopranos

The Sopranos is an American drama series created by David Chase that premiered on HBO on January 10, 1999, and concluded on June 10, 2007. Across six seasons and 86 episodes, it follows Tony Soprano, played by James Gandolfini, a New Jersey mob boss struggling to manage both the criminal organization around him and his family life in suburban North Caldwell. The series begins when panic attacks lead Tony to seek therapy from psychiatrist Dr. Jennifer Melfi, portrayed by Lorraine Bracco. Their sessions provide a central structure for the show, exposing Tony's fears, memories, anger, and resistance to emotional vulnerability. Tony belongs to the fictional DiMeo crime family, whose day-to-day operations include gambling, extortion, construction schemes, theft, and murder. His closest associates include Silvio Dante, played by Steven Van Zandt; Paulie Gualtieri, played by Tony Sirico; Christopher Moltisanti, played by Michael Imperioli; and Salvatore "Big Pussy" Bonpensiero, played by Vincent Pastore. Christopher, Tony's impulsive protégé and Carmela's cousin, repeatedly battles heroin addiction while trying to pursue screenwriting and a possible Hollywood career. The show's criminal plots are often tied to shifting loyalties, FBI surveillance, informants, and conflict with the Lupertazzi family of New York. At home, Tony lives with his wife Carmela, played by Edie Falco, and their children Meadow and A.J., played by Jamie-Lynn Sigler and Robert Iler. Carmela benefits from Tony's income while confronting the moral cost of his violence and infidelity. Tony's relationship with his mother, Livia Soprano, played by Nancy Marchand, is especially consequential in the early seasons. Livia's resentment and manipulation help drive a plot against her son, involving Tony's uncle Corrado "Junior" Soprano, played by Dominic Chianese. The Sopranos became known for combining organized-crime storytelling with domestic arguments, dreams, dark comedy, and detailed depictions of Italian American social life in New Jersey. It received major critical recognition, including the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series in 2004 and 2007. Gandolfini, Falco, and Imperioli each won Emmy Awards for their performances. The final episode, "Made in America," ends in a New Jersey diner as Tony's family gathers for dinner. Its abrupt cut to black prompted extensive discussion because the series does not explicitly state what happens next. In 2021, Chase co-wrote The Many Saints of Newark, a prequel film centered on younger versions of several characters.
