The Handmaid's Tale

The Handmaid's Tale is a television adaptation of Margaret Atwood's 1985 novel. Developed for Hulu by Bruce Miller, the series premiered on April 26, 2017. It follows June Osborne, played by Elisabeth Moss, after the theocratic Republic of Gilead overthrows the United States government. Forced into sexual servitude as a Handmaid, June is separated from her husband Luke and their daughter Hannah. The story combines resistance, trauma, and an ongoing attempt to recover her family and identity inside Gilead's hierarchy.

Gilead assigns fertile women to Commanders, requiring them to undergo the monthly Ceremony, a ritual based on Rachel and Bilhah in Genesis. June serves Commander Fred Waterford, played by Joseph Fiennes, and his wife Serena Joy, portrayed by Yvonne Strahovski. Nick Blaine, played by Max Minghella, is the household's driver and an increasingly important ally. A central thread is June's relationship with the resistance movement Mayday. Her first major escape attempt ends with her capture, but later she helps coordinate information and defiance from inside Gilead. The colonies expose the regime's use of forced labor and toxic conditions. In Canada, Luke, Moira, played by Samira Wiley, and refugees build lives while advocating for those left behind. Emily, portrayed by Alexis Bledel, provides another perspective through exile, imprisonment, and reunion with her wife Sylvia and son.

The series has received major recognition, including multiple Primetime Emmy Awards. Elisabeth Moss won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 2017, and the first season won Outstanding Drama Series. Alexis Bledel won Supporting Actress for Emily in 2017, while Ann Dowd won for Aunt Lydia in 2019. Its visual language uses red Handmaid cloaks and white bonnets as instantly recognizable markers of status and obedience. The production also emphasizes June's restricted viewpoint, often placing viewers inside her psychological experience.

Across its five released seasons, the narrative expands beyond June's household to Gilead's founders, international diplomacy, and the consequences of revolution. Season two ends with June helping smuggle children to safety, an operation that leads to her own capture and severe punishment. Season three follows her efforts to undermine Gilead while Serena faces legal and personal consequences in Canada. Season four brings June back into direct conflict with Fred Waterford and concludes with a decisive act of revenge and fallout.
