Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire

Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire follows Ash Ketchum’s journey through the Hoenn region, adapting the setting, Gym Leaders, and many Pokémon introduced in the Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire games. After leaving Johto, Ash arrives in Littleroot Town with Pikachu and meets Professor Birch. His first Hoenn partner is Treecko, later joined by Taillow, Corphish, Torkoal, and Snorunt. Ash’s objective is to collect eight Hoenn Gym Badges and enter the Hoenn League. The series also introduces May, a beginning Trainer from Petalburg City whose father, Norman, is Petalburg Gym Leader. May initially receives Torchic from Professor Birch and travels because she wants experience before deciding on a path. Inspired by contests, she becomes a Pokémon Coordinator, competing for ribbons that lead to the Hoenn Grand Festival. Her younger brother Max accompanies the group, although he is too young to own a Pokémon. Brock rejoins Ash after his brief return to his family’s Pewter City Gym, bringing his knowledge as a breeder and caretaker. Hoenn’s Gym campaign gives Ash battles against named leaders including Roxanne, Brawly, Wattson, Flannery, Norman, Winona, Tate and Liza, and Juan. Norman is especially important because the match combines Ash’s League goal with May’s family story. Ash eventually uses his established Hoenn League team at the Ever Grande Conference, where he defeats several opponents before losing to Tyson. Tyson’s Meowth, notably, is a battle-trained Meowth rather than the talking member of Team Rocket. May’s contest plot runs alongside Ash’s badges. She earns ribbons in events such as the Rustboro, Slateport, and Fallarbor contests, while rivals including Drew and Harley test her progress. The Grand Festival concludes with May reaching the final rounds but not winning the title. Team Rocket’s Jessie, James, and Meowth remain recurring antagonists, pursuing Pikachu and other rare Pokémon. The Hoenn storyline additionally uses the region’s major legend material: Team Magma and Team Aqua seek to awaken Groudon and Kyogre, respectively. Originally broadcast in Japan as Pocket Monsters Advanced Generation, the production covers the franchise’s sixth through ninth English television seasons: Advanced, Advanced Challenge, Advanced Battle, and Battle Frontier. After the League, Ash enters the Kanto Battle Frontier, while May continues contest competition. Their final Hoenn-era episodes send Ash to Pallet Town and May toward Johto, establishing the transition to Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl. The arc ends with the team separating after the Kanto Battle Frontier and returning from their shared journey home once more.
