Dexter: Resurrection is a Showtime crime drama series that continues the story of Dexter Morgan after Dexter: New Blood. The series was developed by showrunner Clyde Phillips, who also led the original Dexter series during its central years. Michael C. Hall returns as Dexter, the Miami Metro Police blood-spatter analyst who secretly lived as a vigilante serial killer. The new production is a direct sequel to New Blood, rather than a remake or unrelated reboot.
The story begins after the events of New Blood, in which Dexter was shot by his son Harrison Morgan in Iron Lake, New York. Rather than ending with Dexter's death, Resurrection uses that shooting as its starting point. Dexter survives and wakes from a coma, then leaves Iron Lake. The series moves the character into New York City, giving the revival a setting from both Miami and the snowy town used in New Blood.
Harrison remains central to the continuation. Jack Alcott reprises the role, after playing Harrison in New Blood. In that miniseries, Harrison discovers Dexter's identity and struggles with the moral consequences of his father's code. Resurrection therefore carries forward the unresolved relationship between father and son, although the new series also expands Dexter's world beyond the Morgan family. Jennifer Carpenter is not returning as Debra Morgan in the same living form established by New Blood; her presence remains part of Dexter's psychological history.
Several familiar faces return. David Zayas plays Angel Batista, the former Miami Metro Police captain whose suspicions about Dexter were revived in New Blood. James Remar also returns as Harry Morgan, Dexter's deceased adoptive father and internal guide. Their inclusion links Resurrection directly to the original show's mythology. The new cast includes Uma Thurman, who plays Charley, a former special operations officer working for billionaire Leon Prater, played by Peter Dinklage. The casting places Dexter inside a new network of power, wealth, and danger.
Production on Resurrection was announced in 2024, after the strong audience response to New Blood. The project reunites Phillips with Hall and executive producer Scott Reynolds. It is produced for Showtime and Paramount, with the release positioned as a continuation of the television franchise that began with Dexter in 2006. The original series ran for eight seasons and ended in 2013, while New Blood was a ten-episode limited series that aired in 2021. Resurrection extends that narrative directly rather than resetting it.
