Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures is the theatrical film distribution division of Disney Entertainment, the business segment of the Walt Disney Company. The operation began in 1953, when Disney created Buena Vista Film Distribution Company to release its own movies rather than rely on RKO Radio Pictures. Its first release was the live-action feature The Living Desert (1953), a True-Life Adventure documentary that later won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. In 1954, the company was renamed Buena Vista Distribution Company; in 2007, it adopted the name Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It distributed Mary Poppins in 1964, combining live action and animation in a release that earned five Academy Awards, including Best Actress for Julie Andrews. The division also handled Disney’s animated features, from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs reissues to later titles such as The Lion King (1994) and Frozen (2013). Disney had originally released Snow White through RKO; Buena Vista subsequently gave the 1937 film theatrical reissues. During the 21st century, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures became the distributor for films produced by Pixar, Marvel Studios, and Lucasfilm after Disney acquired those companies: Pixar in 2006, Marvel Entertainment in 2009, and Lucasfilm in 2012. Pixar’s Toy Story (1995), released by Buena Vista, was the first feature-length film made entirely with computer-generated imagery. Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame (2019) was distributed by Disney and became the highest-grossing film worldwide at the time of its release, passing Avatar before later rereleases returned Avatar to the lead. The distributor’s 2019 theatrical slate produced an industry-record global total of about $13.2 billion, according to Disney, driven by Avengers: Endgame, The Lion King, Frozen II, Captain Marvel, Toy Story 4, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. That year, it became the first studio distributor to pass $10 billion worldwide in a calendar year. Following Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox in 2019, the division added films from 20th Century Studios and Searchlight Pictures to its distribution portfolio. In 2020, 20th Century Fox was renamed 20th Century Studios. Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures continues to coordinate domestic theatrical releases for Disney’s major film labels, while individual productions retain their own studio identities. Its role includes release dating, marketing coordination, and arranging exhibition with cinema operators across the United States and international markets. Its logo and distribution credit appear on theatrical releases, linking Disney’s labels to audiences worldwide directly.
